| | hunny broke her leg. this is the worst day of my life, this afternoon i had the birds out of their cage as usual and decided its about time i put some decorations up.
I pulled them all out on the conservatory floor and started sorting them out.
I have a lot of african masks hanging on the wall in the conservatory it goes with my african look, they are made of solid wood quite heavy,i reached up to put a piece of tinsel over the mask and it fell down right on top of hunny, she flipped up the conservatory scared,i went after her and realised all was not well,i checked her over and yes she had a broken leg.
Phoned for a taxi and got her to the vets as soon as i possably could, luckily i went straight in,the vet checked her over and it looks like she may have smashed her elbow joint, she has to go to peterborough tomorrow for exrays as they didnt have a small animal exray machine in that vets as its only a small practice.
She did also say her leg might have to be amputated, what i want to know would i be cruel keeping a cockatiel with only one leg,it would break my heart if i have to have her put down, please addvise me what to do. |

Hi naturelover I'm really sorry to hear about hunny, I hope they manage to fix her broken leg but if not she should cope just fine with one though it may take some time getting used to it. I had a canary with one leg for quite a few years and she was fine, loved sitting on her swing still birds are remarkably robust little things compared to us humans! I'm sure she'll be fine |

Only thing I can advise is to do whatever you think is best for her. As much as it might break your heart you obviously dont want her to suffer or to not have a good quality of life. It could be that she is fine with one leg and perfectly happy.
Its horrible having to let a pet go I still get upset when i think of Sammo who was PTS in May, i cant watch videos of him running around yet. |

| | | Re: hunny broke her leg. Hi Naturelover
I just wanted to wish you well tomorrow.
Judging by your photos and tales of Hunny she is quite a little character so I imagine she would be ok if the worst happened and she only had one leg otherwise the vet may not have mentioned it as an option.
Anyway I hope everything goes ok for you both.
My fingers are crossed and good luck!

| | | Re: hunny broke her leg. Sorry to hear that Naturelover. As has been said, birds are very adaptable. I know of a wild blue tit that only had one leg, it managed very well, easily keeping up with the others on the feeders. If a wild bird can survive, I'm sure your bird will be just fine. |

It is probably no consolation but we had a blue tit around the garden for a couple of years which manage very well with one leg, all I can presume was it was treated at sometime by an animal charity after an injury, and released back into the wild.
I hope you are OK Betty, you sound so upset and our thoughts will be with you and Hunny today. I hope all goes well. |

| | | Re: hunny broke her leg. Try not to feel to bad. If they have to amputate give it a go and see how she takes to it. I've heard of pet birds being perfectly happy with one leg but it's very much an individual thing. Thinking of you today.
