| | Photo Competition I don't know if this subject has been discussed before? I was wandering if WAB could hold a photo competition. In which WABers vote for there favourite photos the most votes wins a prize or something along those lines.
How do pepes feel about this?

| | | Re: Photo Competition we did have a competition a year or two ago but setting up the voting proved to be very time consuming to Stu and so I think he's been wary of doing it again. I also seem to remember that very few people went to the trouble of voting which was a shame. But, I'll alert Stu to this thread just in case he's changed his mind.

| | | Re: Photo Competition Thats the problem Matt, you mods and Stu already have enough to do.
Just had a thought though about possibly using the poll facility on a thread to vote(depends on how many poll options you can add of course). You could have a thread each month solely for entries, and as each pic was added it would just be a matter of adding an extra poll option for that image by one of the mods. That way the votes would be sorted by the poll software and would be far less time consuming for Stu and you mods

Mark H | I was thinking of something along these lines. Could make voting member friendly?

| | | Re: Photo Competition We tried the voting idea last year but as usual it was spoiled by a few members voting for each other on the merit that they were friends, rather than on the merit of the image.
We used to have a grading system for images too but the very same members spoiled that too by again voting 5 stars for an image more likely a 2 or 3 star, at best, just because their friend had given them 5 stars for an equally standard image a few hours previous.
These are all great ideas but unfortunately tried and tested and abused by a few to the detriment of everyone else. |

Put the last one behind us, vote unbiasedly then who knows it could turn out to be a cracking annual advent. Surely that way friends of whoever stand a better chance of winning and without a fudged comp but more of a WAB comp for simple fun. If we stick to a winners hall of fame and no prizes then whats the point in trying to fugde a winner any how.
Don't vote for the photographer thats not the competition But the Best Pic.

In that case, all we'd need is Terry Wogan to commentate on it, rather like that Eurovision song contest thing.

Matt | Yep, if I remember right, some of the winners had as many as three votes! |

Be One Be WAB | It would not work Jez.
Those that do it seem oblivious to the damage that it causes. I really liked the star system for photographs. You could go to the search facility, pick a subject, choose one with 5 stars and be guaranteed a super image. It was a perfect resource for those searching for a specific subject. However in the end poor images were rated 5 star and anyone visiting the site for the first time must have wondered what on earth was going on, and simply went elsewhere.
A shame but one of numerous features we have had to scrap through its abuse |

| | | Re: Photo Competition We did play around with a different rating system, with the moderators doing the rating. It proved extremely time consuming trying to go through the galleries and rating the images.
We also had the idea of a top rated gallery, with the most popular images showing first. Neither idea works very well unfortunately, with certain categories swamping others. One of the many reasons why these systems were never shown publicly.
Just goes to show you that we're always trying to think of ideas to liven up the Galleries. |

Rob | That would mean more work for the mods as members wouldnt be able to anonymously post their own pics,so it would be down to the mods to post them.

| | | Re: Photo Competition I know litttle if anything at all realy, about how web sites work other than stu and the mods must give up an awfull amount of their spare time for our enjoyment, so hats off again to all you guys.
So,
What if the competition started as of now.
With images in a monthly competition catagory only.
Could the images be uploaded normally with software blocking the name only to the gallery.
Is it possible to allow each member one vote (click on the image) only per month.
Then maybe the images that go into this catagory wouldnt be going in to other galleries and therefore wouldnt cause an extra influx of images to the site as a whole.
As I say Im no expert so could be talking . . um . . rubbish !
Rob

| | | Re: Photo Competition I'd been planning to look at running a competition from January, but need to check that the software can do it easily and that it won't create to much extra work. As said in some of the other posts, we've had a competition in the past and like everything it usually takes a lot more to set up and run than it first appears.
We'll hopefully have something setup by January, but there's still a ton of other jobs to get through first
