It's that time of year, with the bird flu, are the public going to be buying gobblers like mad 'cause there will be a shortage, or will they shun them ?.

Talking of which, I was in Sainsburys last Saturday and they were down to their last three frozen turkeys, think the panic has begun |

I'm not sure I should say this, but, shhh, went to Lidle's this week, and a frozen goose was £15 for 4 kilo's and a duckling was a fiver.
Merry Christmas.

An appalling one where they would never have even seen the light of day. Kept in stinking filthy conditions. |

Reading in a "comic" yesterday, a muddy field held 30,000 geese that the Gov. said should be under cover, being that many in a field can't have been much of a life, but then what would it have been like under cover ! !.
Commenting on the standards abroad giving people cheap meat, which they want, makes me think you haven't seen much of the conditions here.
Please don't all pounce on me, some farm conditions are superb, but it pushes the price up.

Max. | Sadly those same standards as abroad go on in this country in the name of factory farming and cheap meat. If you want an animal that has had a quality of life then you are looking at smaller producers where the animals are out during the day and in during the night, in small enough numbers per shed that a problem isn't caused. And yes it does cost more but what price a quality of life? I see so many people saying they couldn't afford the price of meat reared well but they have lots of money for luxury items. |

I had to go into the shed over the months and see them getting larger and larger with less and less room and appalling conditions. They were slaughtered eventually by the local car mechanic, and her husband fainted as he had never seen animals slaughtered before. She sold them as "free range", and had plenty of customers for them. |

He had very few chickens and said that he bought the eggs in mainly from a weekly farm auction. He used to sell dozens and dozens of eggs and yet my parents went to the same farm auction and only ever saw one tray of free range available at each auction and he wasn't the person that they saw buying them. I also new a shop that used to sell 'free range'. When all the new regulations were brought in with far more traceability the farmer said that he was stopping producing them. When the shop owner read through what actually constituted 'free range' they realised that there was no way he could have been providing them with free range because he didn't have the land available to do it! It definitely pays getting to know the supplier and seeing what turnover they have. |

I'm shocked by your recent post about the conditions these young turkeys were kept in. I would very much like to find out more about this. If you'd like to get in touch, please email me on kirstyhemming@hotmail.com.
Many thanks,

Do you have a farm or something Mr Goo?
| no my partner, runs a successful shop selling local and organic food, and the meat orders are always good as people can be sure where our meat comes from as we have a very open policy about all our food. |
