It makes me angry... probably down to bad practice like the bernard matthews case..and he was compensated. In theory it could kill off wild birds, not to mention people.

Re: Bird Flu in Norfolk

They do seem to think this outbreak came from wild birds as it is the same strain as has been seen in Germany and Czech republic

naturelover, I hope your birds will be ok in their avairy

I'm sure your cockatiels will be OK this disesase can only be passed on by very close contact usually with other infected birds.

Yes, it's about time factory farming was stopped. Doesn't matter how this or any other disease is transmitted, factory farms are the ideal incubator for encouraging it.

Anyway, the meat tastes rubbish as far as I remember.

Went to see Benjamin Zephaniah last night and he finished the evening with a seasonal poem (not as good in print as when he raps it....):

Be nice to yu turkeys dis christmas
Cos' turkeys just wanna hav fun
Turkeys are cool, turkeys are wicked
An every turkey has a Mum.
Be nice to yu turkeys dis christmas,
Don't eat it, keep it alive,
It could be yu mate, an not on your plate
Say, Yo! Turkey I'm on your side.
I got lots of friends who are turkeys
An all of dem fear christmas time,
Dey wanna enjoy it, dey say humans destroyed it
An humans are out of dere mind,
Yeah, I got lots of friends who are turkeys
Dey all hav a right to a life,
Not to be caged up an genetically made up
By any farmer an his wife.

Turkeys just wanna play reggae
Turkeys just wanna hip-hop
Can yu imagine a nice young turkey saying,
"I cannot wait for de chop",
Turkeys like getting presents, dey wanna watch christmas TV,
Turkeys hav brains an turkeys feel pain
In many ways like yu an me.

I once knew a turkey called........ Turkey
He said "Benji explain to me please,
Who put de turkey in christmas
An what happens to christmas trees?",
I said "I am not too sure turkey
But it's nothing to do wid Christ Mass
Humans get greedy an waste more dan need be
An business men mek loadsa cash'.

Be nice to yu turkey dis christmas
Invite dem indoors fe sum greens
Let dem eat cake an let dem partake
In a plate of organic grown beans,
Be nice to yu turkey dis christmas
An spare dem de cut of de knife,
Join Turkeys United an dey'll be delighted
An yu will mek new friends 'FOR LIFE'.

Perhaps the roof of the aviary should be covered and certainly keep their food indoors.

I lost two birds in three days two weeks ago, both young and one was my friends that was holidaying here

I agree it is how they are kept that sort of makes? the disease, but the latest outbreak is with free range turkeys

Great - he manages to get so many serious points over while still being funny. I can't find the lyrics to 'A Beetle called Derek' .... but like this:

There was a young vegan
Called Steven,
Who just would not kill for no reason,
This kid would not eat
No cheese or no meat
And he hated the foxhunting season.

Pretty appropriate perhaps?

Re: Bird Flu in Norfolk

hi mrs fish thankyou for answering, the birds should be well protected as they have corigated plastic roof over their flight, pluss all their seed is fed to them inside a shed, the only thing that i give them in the flight is greenary, perhaps i should stop putting that outside untill this flu bug has gone,if it dose that is,i hate to see all those beatiful birds murdered, surley there must be a better way to deal with them, makes me very sad.

.

And from the amount of half eaten turkeys that are thrown on the tip it seems that most people feel the same way. 10 million turkeys reared and slaughtered only for a large amount to end up thrown away. How much damage does that do to the environment? And all that terrible suffering in factory farmed units.

Benjamin is great as always.

I don't know eh? Everything goes downhill when I leave Norfolk

Hope everything's ok back home. My house is rather close to the exclusion zone and my best friend's house is inside it

Please bear in mind that there is 'free range' and what is called free range, in the latter instance it was admitted on interview that so called free range birds where housed overnight, thus putting them in unnaturally close proximity.

Also, peoples percieved ideas about free range are usually very different to the reality with far more birds stocked in an area than people would think. Depending on the size of the housing, weaker or more nervous birds might never come out of doors.

That all depends on whether it is a shop bought one or home made. Shop bought ones are like the majority of shop prepared food: DISGUSTING! It is completely beyond me while people buy so much ready prepared food when it tastes SO awful.

Re: Bird Flu in Norfolk

They said this out break was due to wild birds. Yet again no wild have been found. Maybe they brought in chicks from abroad to raise hear for the Christmas season. The birds only have to be on British soil for so long then they claim they are British birds.
