Exclamation Rats NEED a loving home!

I have a friend in Great Yarmouth who rescues rats and she had four beautiful girls handed to her today who desperately need new homes:

"I am looking for a loving, permanent home for 4 female rats that were brought to me today.
Their owner was moving and couldn't keep them, and they were at the stage of being euthanised due to having nowhere to go.

They can go as a group of 4, or I will split into pairs, but I will allocate pairs based on which rat is most bonded to which other.

The two dumbos are 6 months or less, the two top-eared are around a year.
We have a champagne hooded and a black hooded top ear, and a black berkshire and a black hooded dumbo.
The black hooded top-ear has a pretty loud respiratory rattle, which the previous owner says she has attempted to treat in the past but it never goes away. I will treat her with baytril myself and see if it makes it better, but new owner should be aware that it could be an ongoing issue. Past owner also claims the champagne has a slight respiratory issue too, but no signs so far.

The champagne is cage aggressive, and she will nip if you touch her inside the cage.
Outside, however, she appears to be fine so far. It is likely that due to her pink eyes, she simply doesn't see well and bites as a first defense. She seemed to be ok when I let her know I was there first.

All are extremely active and busy, but could benefit from some handling as they don't seem THAT impressed with it right now, but they are friendly.

I can transport them as far as Norwich, but any further and the new owner will have to make their own transport arrangements.
If no interest, they'll stay here and go in with my girls."

I've seen photos and they are beautiful . If you think you can help, please send me a private message and I'll put you in touch with her.

Thanks

Did they all get rehomed together?

And its so nice to hear some good news as well!!

Re: Rats NEED a loving home!

Jo (Bunster) is picking her new ratties up today (I think?). Ziggy is keeping one of the females as she's extremely hand-shy and needs a bit of extra TLC.

Re: Rats NEED a loving home!

Hi, good to hear there's a happy ending.
I'm fascinated to find out what those ratty terms mean. What is a dumbo? - I can guess it's something to do with the ears - and is a "hooded" a bi-colour?

Cute photos please!!

Here's a page on rat terminology.

If you google 'Dumbo rat', prepare to cute of cuteness overload when you see some pictures

I expect Bunster will put something up in the 'Pets Corner' thread when she gets time

Re: Rats NEED a loving home!

2 of these girlies arrived safe home with me yesterday. They are settling in well and are sooo sweet! Hopefully they will get on with my other ratty girl.

I will put their pics on pets corner soon, along with the rest of my gang - it could take a while!

Re: Rats NEED a loving home!

Hi, I had a look around for Dumbos and they really are quite irresistible!

Here's my favourite picture, from here

Check that baby ratty!

My only worry was reading that they've come from America, and I fear that people will try to breed more and more extreme ones. I know this from cats, where breeders have taken the most beautiful and graceful creatures on the planet and turned them in to folds, sphinx, extreme longhairs and the awful munchkin. Even the dear old siamese are now stretched beyond recognition. Let's hope they can leave well enough alone!

Re: Rats NEED a loving home!

Glad there is a happy ending. I just love pet rats although I wish they had longer lives. But these ones are lucky. And what a sweet photo

Re: Rats NEED a loving home!

How cute are they?

I dont mind the 'pet' varieties but really dont like the ones which are coming in from the field.. running the length of my house in their hobnailed boots and stealing food from my kitchen!!! I wondered how the tomatoes (only things not boxed or locked away) had fallen off the microwave.. Mr Ratty was helping himself. A week ago Henrya was visiting and my dog had earlier been making a fuss...I turned to go to the kitchen and there was a rat hanging from the wall. It had run up the wall between an exposed beam and the wall and the poor thing had hung himself! Took twenty minutes for henry to dislodge the poor animial.

Anyone wanting to rehome a rat or dozen is welcome to come and take these little beggars
