| | | Re: Horse Riding I go riding every Saturday. Wouldn't give it up for anything. I find it's nicer to go to a private/small yard rather that a large school as it's quieter, and you get a lot of one-to-one, and generally a longer session. Ask around and ask local riders/horse owners if they know of any good places.
Hope that helps Sarah

| | | Re: Horse Riding Ive go an Irish sports horse called Dudley hes a handsome lad ill put some pics up, look in the local horse tack shop for some one who wants part loan or someone to ride their horse or muck out, i agree the small yard like mine is the best option as you can get a horse to look after and in turn for looking after neddy you can ride it too. |

| | | Re: Horse Riding I was born into a family with horses..and started to ride at the age of just 3yrs..with grandparents over in brussels with a riding school ..I can remember spending many a holiday over there getting into jumping cross country and then dressage..We bred Arab's for many year such a lovely breed..My parents still have around ten of them..My own horse is down with them for the time being..I still do ride when i can its something you never really leave..There are a few riding school close by and also private stables which I did keep my own horse there for sometime ..With offers of a ride from friends ..So my advice to you Jez is not to give up and hunt around for that right place to get you back into the saddle...Good luck..
Julie

About 10 yrs ago It took me just over a month to break one of the stallion in ..so to speak ..the ride was incredible so graceful and yet you could feel the controlled power that you had beneath you ...He seemed to dance with you upon his back..like all the horses I broke in I always used the hackamore bridle..
They are such an incredible horse..

| | | Re: Horse Riding I personally don't go riding but I live in a village where there are several stables in the area and I see riders and horses going along the old railway line that has been converted to a walkway at the back of my house. It's a lovely site and I like the sound of the hoofs going past my window but don't like the deposits they leave on the walkway.
Is it expensive to keep a horse as I've noticed that a few of my neighbours keep horses on a nearby farm?? |

| Put it this way, you have to -buy the horse (never under £1000)
-buy the tack
-buy the feed
-pay the vet's bills
-get the horse shod (not always necessery, depends on the local terrain)
-maintain the tack/horse
-may need a horsebox, inc insurance, maintainance, etc.
-insurance for horse and/or rider and a couple of other things I cant remember!
So yes it is reletively expencive!!!!
It also takes up a lot of time as you need to excersice it regularly, feed it, and give it general attention every day. But it's not the same with all horses; some of them (like shetties) can get on quite well by themselves. But it's not the best idea to have a horse on it's own. ALWAYS have a comanion with it, because they are naturally herd animals, and they like their friends!!
Appart from that, it's great fun!! And they're wonderful companions, and you get very fit from it. Sarah
