| | | Talking of Daft Tricks . . . . . . a few weeks ago I went happily into my most favourite fungi reserve - Roudsea NNR in South Lakeland - and got hopelessly lost . . . I decided to go and search a part of the wood I don't normally go in . . . I had the compass in my camera bag as usual - but no map to use it with . . . and by the time I admitted to myself that I was lost and wasn't becoming anywhere near un-lost an hour and half had passed and I had walked (read searched) found an outside fence - looked at the view - re-orientated myself and got bull-nosed and was not going to walk back down the road - but cut across to where I wanted to be (jumping three ditches - with all the grace of a camel tripping over a brick!) and after a lot more walking, cursing and sweating (not looking for fungi you notice at this stage. . .) I finally ended up where wanted to be
A couple of days ago I took a good friend with me to the caravan and said 'we will go to Roudsea and see how the fungi are doing. . .' Yep - to my actute embarrassment I got lost all over again in another part of the reserve and my friend (and me come to think of it) hadn't wanted to walk that far . . . I just don't know who lets me out . . . Trust me - I'm a ranger by profession - I lead guided walks at work . . . oh boy - how embarrassing - I will never live this one down Well its either an age thing or I'm coming down with Altzheimers - and they do say if you can spell it you haven't got it So I must just be a bleeping idiot then

Heh! heh! heh! Thanks Jez - yep it sure is the shrooms - walk looking at the floor in any wood and not glancing up from time to time - esp off the paths and before you know it - you know nothing and nowhere - gauranteed! I'm laughing now but I wasnt at the time - esp with an 'audience'!!
If you want to be lost I can recommend Roudsea - if I didn't love the place so much I would avoid it like the plague! Have printed an A4 size map of it out on hubbys printer and will take it next time and try and mark various spots - but I suspicion that the map will not match the actual place . . . if I never post again on here - start looking in Roudsea please!!!

At least, that's waht I tell my better half when I want to take an "interesting" looking shortcut - it generally is "interesting", as opposed to interesting, as ditches, brambles, nettles, detours, and delays almost always occur
The daft thing is, she still goes along with the "shortcut", so I reckon she must be dafter than me..... (her answer: "I DID marry you ) |

If the 'better half' was with me I wouldn't get lost - cos he navigates better than me......... unfortunately I was showing the wood to a friend (who really didn't want to walk quite that far ) 30 years ago I could unerringly go someplace and only take a detour when I honestly did want to detour - these days - the detours crop up more often than the unerring :
