Traditional Sunday Lunch

While perparing for evening meal today of Lambs Hearts with garlic It crossed my mind just how many of us are still having traditional sunday lunch ...with all the different cuts of meats and veg that you can get now and of course the convenience of trotting off to your local pub or restaurants just how many of us are still doing the roast beef and yorkshire puddings...

My dear grandparents had a sunday lunch for as long as i can remember and living within a 5 min walk from my house you could smell it before you got there...accasionally while out walking around a small village i can still smell this...which always brings a smile to my face..

I will make a point this week to stock up on some beef and make a few yorkshires...

How about you..

Julie

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

Always have the traditional Sunday roast dinner, always will. They only difference is that we tend to have it around 1800hrs these days and not dinner time.

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

I like to cook a good sunday roast, but in the last year i havent been doing them so often. This is probably cause i did a lot of travelling and was on the road a lot but since i have returned, the last few months i just havent cooked many at all. They are my favourite dinner and am definatly going to make more of an effort.

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

I've always done a Sunday Roast, it's something that my parents always did and I've carried on with my family but like Tormentil we have our about 6pm these days as we're often out during the day walking or doing other stuff etc. I tend to alternate each week between beef, lamb, chicken or pork, or if I really push the boat out then it's duck or pheasant!

The only time I haven't done one is when it's been blisteringly hot (not this year I hasten to add ) and we all look forward to a good feed on a Sunday!

Julie - if you're going to have a bash a beef again make sure you get a rib ok and on the bone preferably as there's so much more flavour than say silverside or topside etc. - tasteless in my opinion

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

My father, (who wasn't from Yorkshire) also was the Yorkshire Pudding specialist - is this a "Mens' Thing"? In honesty, my few attempts to do it were not great and I leave it to the wife nowadays.
Seriously, I don't think it's the recipe it's a matter of how you cook it - pouring it into hot oil at the right temperature, not fiddling about for other items to cook (it is the most important part of the meal, after all!), not opening the oven door every few minutes to see if it's cooked ) ... so yes, practice!

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

If im at home or at least someones home on a sunday (After a Sat night out i can end up anywhere i always make or eat a Sunday Roast without fail...always have always will..

My Sunday Roast Chicken is amazing...much better than mums ( and so are my roast potatoes or roasted butternut squash)...but ill be honest i havent cooked a joint of beef or lamb myself very often as i could never afford it when i lived on my own...chicken i could afford.

Having just added jam making and hopefully bread making to my catering arsenal i think ill try and cook a joint this weekend.

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

Yorkshire puddings must be a "male" thing. My father was English and my mother Scots, she made the dinner but dad had to make the Yorkshire puddings.
I have carried on the tradition, courtesy of "Aunt Bessie" from the supermarket, easy.

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

My kids always said that I cook the best Sunday roast. I prefer Lamb with mint sauce, but I'll do Yorkshire pud with that as well (Mrs Beetons recipe). Also crispy roast spuds. I always make too many Yorkshires so as there is enough for pudding and the following day with jam or something else sweet, or just by itself.

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

The only time we really have a traditional Sunday Roast is if we go and visit Steves parents on a Sunday.
But i remember growing up we use to have one every Sunday without fail and it was always with Fresh veggies, none of this frozen rubbish most people seem to use these days.

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

Thought I'd bung the recipie on here Julie in case anyone else wants it....

2oz Plain Flour
1 large Egg
1/4 pint milk
pinch of salt

Da-da! That's it! That will make 6 small usual sized ones so just double it if you want more or want to make a toad in the hole or whatever. I sometimes like to add a pinch of herbs to mine too, when the mood takes me lol!

I'm not actually from Yorkshire although we live here now, but originally from Surrey!

Good luck with the Yorkies Julie!

Re: Traditional Sunday Lunch

Personally its one meal I always look forward to all week.
When I was a chef, It was something you could rely on, most weeks the only time you actually sit down and eat. Not the same as a home cooked Roast though.
(making myself hungry)
Thinking though its amazing the amount of people who goes out for a roast.
Sure there are many who dont have an oven

That would never have done in our house. 9 of us; Mum, Dad and us kids, and we always had a big Yorkshire pudding each, before the roast and veg, probably 'cause there were n't much meat !!

Maybe that's where the original idea came from.. a filler-upper for when meat was in short supply?

The Lioness loves a "proper" Sunday dinner it is a family meal (even if they are not at home)

As kids we always had yorkys before our main meal and yes its a cheap filler, We still have a roast about 3 or 4 times a week with yorkshire puds , as for been a man thing I often cook meals but wife insists she always makes them....

And also agree a nice piece of rib of beef beats everything ,

Im sure this itself could become a debate but any way. I am sure yorkshire pudding was in replacement of bread. A nice change

Roast topside can be great, if cooked in the right way. Certainly my choice.

hehe! beg to differ on that one Meles Topside is tasteless - yuk! Agreed that all meat especially beef needs to be cooked in a certain way to get the best out of it, but a nice fat rib with good marbling 'and' on the bone... can't beat it! Oh, and the chef (ie. me!) gets to nibble the bone as well... mmmm....

Coasty - you have a roast 3-4 times a week! - lucky you!

cooked right it is so tender, I agree with you that off the bone has more flavour but traditiona
