America's view of Scotland

I read in the local newspaper today that in a poll by the Scottish Tourist Board, the majority of Americans see Scotland as a backward country without Microwave ovens or Internet connection and the only Scot that they could name apart from Robert Burns and William Wallace was Sean Connery. Sad, especially when we gave them their biggest recreational invention - the television.

We also gave the world - Anaesthetics, Artificial Diamonds, Pneumatic Tyres, Fax Machines, the first cloned mammal (Dolly), Hypodermic syringes, Mackintosh Raincoats, Macadamised roads, Penicillin, Paraffin, Radar Defense System, Refrigerators, The Steam Engine, The telephone, Thermos bottles, The telegraph, and Whisky to name but a few as I checked all these out on the Internet.

Oh - and we also invented the Microwave

Don't forget that an unhealthy percentage of their population believe that the World is not much older than 10,000 years....

Strange. An awful lot of Americans will, if asked, gleefully tell you that most of them (caucasian americans, anyway) consider themselves to be either Scottish, Irish or Italian as well as American, whether they are or are indeed, not!

Re: America's view of Scotland

It's strange how people can interpret something to be completely wrong. For example when people down South think that all people in the North live in terraced houses surrounded by factories.

Re: America's view of Scotland

I remember when I was planning my first trip with my partner to the Scottish Highlands she asked whether she would need a passport and a different currency .... and whether there would be mains electricity and water supplies

I had a much more informed view of Scotland having had many previous trips although even on my first trip approaching the far north west tip of the mainland it did seem like the edge of the world.

For such a small nation Scotland has given so much to the world .... and not just malt whisky

Re: America's view of Scotland

How many famous Scots can anybody who has bashed the Yanks mention? I never knew myself half the things created by the Scots, I thought every thing was made in China.

Re: America's view of Scotland

Saw a clip on TV last night of 5 Americans being asked what they thought of when Scotland was mentioned. 4 of them said "Kilts/Skirts and the 5th said Quilts
Isnt it fun to be ignorant.
