wonderful day

I am just home from a wonderful day out at Welches Dam. As I opened the door to the hide a heron took off.. in as many minutes we saw 4 more.. and over the day a total of 11 heron.
The swans were a bit fiesty and two flew straight at the hide and one flew straight in front of us..the noise of their flight is incredible!!

A family of coots have made their home infront of the hide and it was marvelous watching the parent feed them.

To end a wonderful day a kingfisher flew across the hide giving me my first ever sighting!

Also saw my first sighting of an emperor dragon fly.. my they are beautiful

A very happy day

Re: wonderful day

Hi Jaki, what a great day! I would love to see a Kingfisher and I have never seen an Emperor
dragonfly so you are two up on me already . I really hope you have some decent photo's, even if not to post but for your own reference. I saw 3 woodpeckers Friday and not a good photo to prove it . I have my fingers crossed for you .

Re: wonderful day

Hi Jaki,

Glad you had a good day! Well done on spotting a Kingfisher! I saw one once there too.

Did you happen to see the Tree Sparrows by the visitor's centre at Welches Dam? It's the only place I go to where I know I'm almost guaranteed a sighting of them. There used to be Corn Buntings there too, but I haven't seen them on my last couple of visits.

Pete

Re: wonderful day

Thank you Pete, Goosey, Paul and cazzie for your replies. It had been a gorgeous day out there at the dam. Henrya and I were in our favourite hide, which is the Welches Dam Hide. My walking difficulties mean we seldom go further.

The walk back was wonderful after 7pm with lazy common darter dragons sitting on the fence actualy allowing me to touch them. This is incredible.. I had no idea their wings were so hard! I had expected something like Crane Fly wings, and next time I am going to encourage one onto my hand. There was also a huge bronze dragon which I havent started to identify!!

The Emperor let us watch him for some time but as soon as I brought out my camera he was off!! How do they know???

A few steps from the hide was a lovely Painted Lady resting on a thistle.

This site has so much to offer that we have never made it back to Welney which had been our destination when we found WD. We have now made 5 visits and I dont think we will go anywhere else for some time, there is so much to see.

Fraid I didnt see tree sparrows at the VC Pete, at least I didnt notice them other than to say oh yes sparrows. I have an abundance of sparrows at home and lovely little dunnock. It is bad of me not to seperate them.

Thanks for sharing our day

It's a great feeling when your day exceeds your expectations, You never forget your first Kingfisher sighting, at least I haven't!
I'm pleased you had such a good day.
