There is also that E magazine that pops up on our google ads sometimes - wildlife extra I think - tho again that isnt just dedicated to british wildlife.
One of the projects that i'd like to do (either under the wab banner , with stus permission, or independently) would be a monthly british wildlife E magazine mailed out to a emailing list - however i am aware that i have rather too much to do already at the moment so i think i will give it the swerve for the mo

But after reading about British Wildlife and checking out there website I've just ordered a one year subscription.
Looking forward to my first issue now. |

| | | Re: Wildlife mag ! heads up!!!!!!! BBC wildlife is nowhere near as good as it used to be! i looked recently and its half the size, full of adverts for expensive equipment i cant afford and i doubt serious wildlife enthusiasts would be it anyway as the articles seemed very thin on content, I dont think British WIldlife is too technical at all I find the balance great and forces some further reading from me and I tyend to take 2 months to read it as i pick it up for an article at a time. |

| | | Re: Wildlife mag ! heads up!!!!!!! Im starting to regret saying British Wildlife is a bit "Heavy going"...i just meant in comparison to the more amateur level BBC WILDLIFE etc...personally i love a bit of meat to my reading and articles....mags like BBC and such always just scratch the surface in articles that could have or should have gone on for 5 or 6 pages...and leave you feeling still hungry.
I also adore the size, thick book bound edge and simple cover artwork of British Wildlife...pure class..
There is a little known mag i DO enjoy for a bit of lighter reading that i seem to be forever singing its prases on here...called "Countryman" and it is indeed little in size too.....packed full of uk based countryside and wildlife facts , news, articles with some decent depth to them ( from writers such as the late Jack Hargreaves to the current Richard Mabey)..plus old fashioned country ways and tales, recipes, photos...history etc etc....you normally find it on the very bottom shelf due to its size next to a similar mag called the "dalesman"...worth a look...oh and what reminded me about countryman is that this month sees its format change BACK to a prefered numbered bookbound cover like nat geo/ british wildlife etc....its a little gem of a mag...a real charmer which i love even more from the fact i dont know anyone personally other than me that buys it or reads it which makes it feel like a little secret ha ha. Countryman magazine - countryside magazines - rural magazines - wildlife magazines - nature magazines |

| | | Re: Wildlife mag ! heads up!!!!!!! I received the August edition of British Wildlife on Tuesday. Haven’t had chance to read it yet but there is certainly seems to be plenty of knowledge to be gleamed from it.
I also saw an advert for another new weekly mag called something like bugs and insects. You get a free "real" bug or insect encased in a clear plastic block with each edition. I must rush to the news agent and start collecting that one as well NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

| | | Re: Wildlife mag ! heads up!!!!!!! I guess the only good thing about the new mag is that while it's not quite meeting what us adults want from it, it may well appeal to younger readers who know little about wildlife.
If it does that, it's a great thing!
I would much rather see youngsters wanting to read this magazine (oooh it has a pretty owl/mouse/etc on the front cover) than a naff comic.

Purplepixii | I was a bit dismissive of this magazine above, but I agree that it is good for children and could indeed stimulate a long lasting interest in wildlife. I don't think it offers much to adults though

| | | Re: Wildlife mag ! heads up!!!!!!! I brought the first edition yesterday and am really impressed with it. So this morning I subscribed to it.. As I stated in another thread on this I know it works out expensive in the long run it is printed on top quality paper. I will not miss £1.99 a week.. we all waste more then that on junk
Also for me in my business it will be a great asset for the children to use for research and information as it is written so they can understand it to, and will go nicely with all the Wildlife Books I have also been and still am collecting.
I showed it to my next door neighbour who was so impressed she is ordering it for her 8 year old daughter.

Personally im quite excited...I do like BBC WILDLIFE but i no longer buy it as its only the uk wildlife articles that interest me and its often full of overseas stuff....but this little beauty is all english...and you get a binder eventually which im always a sucker for !.
Now i have looked around the site...cant work out if its subscription only or it will be on shop sale?...but i thought id give peeps a heads up ( they initially plan 52 issues unless there is a lot of interest/demand) and its only £1.99 a pop ! splendid..i feel like a kid again going to the newsagents for my reserved copies of "The Countryside Companion"
Dan https://wildlife-of-britain.net/default.asp | Hi, I got exited too when I saw it advertised on t.v this morning much to my kids amusement, I will buy it later, cant wait. |

| | | Re: Wildlife mag ! heads up!!!!!!! Yes i just picked up the first 99p issue...
It does remind me hugely of the "Country companion" (or was it Countryside Companion?) i collected as a kid in the 80's...it probably is the same thing just revised...but....i gave my country companion collection away when i discovered girls and stuff...and have missed them ever since...so this is a way of getting another collection to pass onto my kids (when i have some)....before THEY discover girls.... and birds and bees
Oh another thing...the little mag "Countryman" im always raving on about new issue is out with it gone back to the classic format with book bound edge and numbered..... Red Squirrel on cover if your looking out for it...and its a very small magg ( A5 i think?) |

| | | Re: Wildlife mag ! heads up!!!!!!! My Mum recently gave me a case of Books (Steve wasn't impressed) and in the case i found One and a half Binders of ' The Living Countryside' that they started to buy when we were kids, It was great to look through them again after so many years.. I dont know what happened to the rest of them probably lost during the years we spent moving when my dad was in the RAF.
I wonder how many of the facts etc in them have change dramaticaly.. it will be interesting to compare them with this new one

I think I'll stick with that.

As i say....1.99 a week is no biggy....it will just be a pain if i forget one week and miss one but they do offer back issues or 4 part subscriptions which i may do just once to bag the free gifts.
Incidentally...is anyone sure what gift you get? do u choose 1 or is it all 3? or a different one with each extra subscribtion...i liked the look of the reasonably sturdy looking but budget bins as i would leave them in the car glove box ...BUT i also noticed the classic (* the items shown in the photographs may not match the items recieved)...small print, which means you could get some of those terrible minature fold up £4.99 binoculars that are as good as useless. |
