RSPB Badges

This summer when I was in England I started buying the RSPB badges. I decided to buy just what birds etc I had seen although a couple were bought because I couldn't resist, so everytime I saw a box I would have a good look and buy a few. I pinned them on to the strap of my camera case. I have 18 now + a Bassenthwaite Osprey (not Rspb). What is annoying is that it will be ages until I am back in Britain before I can buy some more.
I looked to see if I could find out more about them and see if there was a list of what could actually be bought, I wanted to see if Adders were available. I couldn't actually find a list but lots of people were bidding on Ebay for them. I have now taken one off the strap and put it back on its card, as one exactly the same, on the same sort of card has had bids of over 70 pounds!

Does anyone know if Adders are amoung the birds, mamals, insects and other mamals that can be bought?

I remember Nightshade started a thread about them a while back - sorry if this is repeating an old thread.

Re: RSPB Badges

Ooo! So which one were they bidding £70 for then? My son collects pin badges (has over 300 now) including some of the RSPB ones. The only mammal he's got is the Otter atm. I don't know if they do an Adder.

I'm hopefully going to Malham Tarn again today and I know they sell the badges at the visitor centre in Malham, I could certainly pop in there for you and see if I can find out! If there are any others that you'd particularily like, I'd be happy to get them for you and send them over?!?

Re: RSPB Badges

I hope that those that are profiteering from the sales of badges, which cost them very little, are donating the money back to the charity

Re: RSPB Badges

No, there are no Adder badges and I agree with Andrew on this issue of people profiteering out of a charity. Bit sad really. I do hope they donate the whole lot back into conservation that it is meant for.

Thats awfully kind Cazzie, if you could ask that would be great just so I know to keep an eye out or not. No need to put yourself out though.
Have a great day out at Malham tarn if you go

I have just seen there are no Adder badges after all - but thanks for offering!

I agree with you both.
The Pound is only a general donation guide for the badges, it did cross my mind at the time how many people might even put in less.

Shame about there being no Adder badges though.

Re: RSPB Badges

Hi goosey, Why don't you sent the RSPB an e-mail as they have a shop. They could sell the whole collection in there or at least let you know where you can get them from.

This is on the RSBP site which i think is great news
Pin badge scheme has now raised £2.2 million for vital conservation work!
It also says that you cant buy them on line..
I have yet to see any on sale here.. But will keep looking as i would like to collect them as well.

Re: RSPB Badges

Well I hope that none of you were thinking that I would personally 'profiteer' from my son's collection of badges. He has many admittedly, the majority purchased from charity shops (by me!) and it was something that he could do that wouldn't take up much space in his small bedroom and that he would take pleasure out of owning (I'm always hunting out unusual or interesting ones when I get the chance!)

The RSPB badges are particularily nice and we have a few of them (not just birds) but I have always paid the going rate for them and as Kymba has just pointed out, they have raised a considerable amount of money for conservation work, so everyones a winner!

The lady at the visitor centre today didn't really know if there was actually an Adder one Goosey, but I did ask

If the RSPB don't do one, maybe I could find a pewter one for you when out on my travels - seeing as you're obviously a keen fan of Adders atm! My son has a few nice pewter ones and they do tend to be found in the more obscure creatures I find.

No need to look Cazzie thanks. I think part of the fun of collecting is actually choosing a specific badge personally, one that means something to me and reminds me of a day out or the first time I saw something. If it takes a while to find it, the feeling will be all the better. It also makes me feel as if I am helping as those coins drop into the boxes.

Re: RSPB Badges

There's a Sand Lizard, its only a matter of time before there's an Adder one!

I use them as drawing pins or map pins in my cork notice-board.

The cards they come on are thrown, I'm not collecting them for their value - just becaise they are ace!!

I have lots but the butterfly and damselfly ones are my fav at the moment!

Re: RSPB Badges

I have just read that 2.2 million pounds has been raised by the sale of these badges. Thats great news! It seems to have been a successful campaign? I bought few of them while staying in Derbyshire a year or two ago(?). I would like to get some more, so I am hoping to find them in some of the rspb visitors centres, like at Rainham Marshes, etc. I bought the last one in a pub!

Re: RSPB Badges

Hi

I've had a look on the auction site and it's not the badges that are pulling the money , it's the cards they're on.The new badges that you get for a quid look to be going for about a quid
The RSPB have changed the cards a few times over the years and the first series are the ones the collectors are after. They have also released some limited edition cards and ones that advertise other businesses , one recently went for over £40 because it was on a "Pets at Home" card and it was just a normal blue tit badge.
One guy has his own website dedicated to his RSPB badge collection. People will always collect things and I bet a large collection of them looks good. At the end of the day it's the old supply and demand I guess.

Just thought you'd be interested
