WAB badges, or l should say lack of them!

On Friday we were at Haweswater in the Lakes and hoping for a chance to spot England's only Golden Eagle - a male. It was tough steep walk but the views were stunning and was rather exhilerating. However, an hour later we realised we had probably taken the wrong path at the beggining of the walk so started our descent. On the way back we bumped in to 3 people who asked us about the hide and had we seen the bird, we said we hadn't and hoped it was on a different route. Eventually we got to the spot and a really great RSPB guy let us have use of the scopes so we were able to see one of the Eagle's three nests. He said we were the first to come up to the viewing point that day and gave us some interesting facts. After a while the 3 people we had met earlier arrived, we had a natter and were dissapointed at the no show of the Eagle, although we saw 4 or 5 Red Deer including a calf which my daughter WAB member Bambi was chuffed about. As we were about to leave the RSPB guy told us a good spot for seeing Adders. So I was absolutely delighted to get some photo's of a male and female and something positive came out of the day for me.
Yesterday I had a PM from GME saying he had met us at Haweswater!!!!! I can't believe it , it was so remote, we had met twice and hadn't realised. If my photo hadn't been in the Mugshots Gareth may not have made the connection (must have been my knees, I was wearing the same shorts ). If only we had WAB badges, it would have made all the difference .
Anyway Gareth, it was nice to meet you and some of your family and thanks for contacting me. I wonder how often that has happened and members have been oblivious?

Re: WAB badges, or l should say lack of them!

Interesting you should say that. Recently I visited the Farne Islands. When I got back, I was viewing the gallery and saw that Black (and a couple of other WABBERs, I think) had posted virtually the same photos that I had taken. I was wondering on the boat across whether there were any other WABBERs aboard.

Black, or any other WABBER, if you are reading this, I was on the 2 o'clock boat to Inner Farne on Thursday 28th June.

Goosey, I hope the bad weather is missing you up there in the Lake District. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Jenny

Re: WAB badges, or l should say lack of them!

big long thread on the forum about the badges, and despite nearly getting it sorted on several occasions something always seems to crop up that delays getting the final design done...basically a really good quality version of the wab logo above.

nothing planned for the next couple of weeks while I move house, and then it's still sitting in a list of tons of other things to do like the news section, kids section, reviews section update, lots of fundraising letters to write and send out, new directory etc, and of course the 2008 calendar will have to be set up soon...anyone got a lifeboat?

no , but i know the sinking feeling to which you are reffering only too well

when i eventually surface from the morass of work work , private work, and wab work ( kids section , teachers resources , advice sheets, funding finding etc) I'll be happy to help out with any design work thats needed

i'm slightly confused tho - i thought the consensus on the badges was that the final design was a racing green background with just the words wild about britain on it ??

yep, it was, but after speaking to the other trustees last weekend we're thinking that we really need to build everything around the single WAB identity/logo that will be consistently used on all badges, t-shirts, webpages, headed letters, business cards etc.

that makes perfect sense to me stu.

one point as regards the enamel badges tho is they probably dont need a massively high quality file to work from because they will not be directly reproducing it (as you do on mugs , t shirts, etc etc) rather they would use the design as guidance while they were creating a template of it in brass to hold the different colour enamel powders.

I've been speaking to some enamel badge manufactuers about doing one for work so i can send you the exact spec they demand for art work if you want (its at work but i'm in the office tommorow so i'll bang it over to you then)

Re: WAB badges, or l should say lack of them!

cheers, that would be great

one of the things that we will do later on with the main logo design is make versions of it for winter, spring, summer, autumn, birds, trees etc and thought about maybe also doing a camouflage version of the badge in shades of green, that won't shine/sparkle and scare off the wildlife . As a result, any idea if they can do some sort of matt version for a badge?

hmmm - i'm not sure about that, tho enamel isnt that shiny anyway and mind you in the sort of dimensions we are talking about any possible reflection would certainly be less than that off a watch/ camera lens/ scope/ pair of binos etc anyway.

Also btw the prices i originally got for wab were predicated on the badges being square - so i'm not sure they'll hold for an oblong shape , tho i dont suppose they'll be that different

if flash off the badge was a major problem I suppose we could look at sew on /iron on as well or instead - the people i'm dealing with do that option too so i can look into price etc for that as well (tho here I do think the quality of the artwork is more of a factor because they use the image to either screen print or embroider fabric badges)

Anyway I'll speak to my guy tommorow and find out about shiny/not shiny, and also prices and dimensions for both enamel and fabric- I'll do it all in the guise of work and not mention the wab connection at all

Lol!! Yep, I have a fairly good memory for people (though I bottled it and didn't want to make a prat of myself by asking at the time - kicking myself now!!). We were the only people who visited the hide all day so it was a big coincidence!!
It was a lovely walk and it was fantastic to see my first wild Adders (thanks to goosey for pointing their location out) though the no-show of the Golden Eagle was a downer (more reason to go back though I suppose)
Yeah, if we had got the badges it would have been perfect and stopped me missing the chance to have a good natter with another WAB member.
Good luck Stu - it sounds like you've got your hands very full!!! We'll wait eagerly for developments....

goosey (and bambi) it was really nice to meet you (even though I wasn't fully sure I had done). I wouldn't like to comment if it was the knees that sealed it..
Take care and enjoy the rest of your trip over here. Hope to bump into you again one day You never know, with my family's connections to Holland it could be over there next time!

On a light note.......
In the meantime while badges are being produced perhaps we could all walk around with the left trouser leg rolled up or wear a hat sideways or maybe declare 'Yan tan kipperbang haaaah!' in order to test for recognition
On second thoughts drop the trouser leg bit as it would attract too many midges, mozzies and ticks!

Re: WAB badges, or l should say lack of them!

I’m all for ‘the rolled up left trouser leg’ idea!
I’ll be a Martin Mere in 5 or 6 weeks, will there be any other trouser wearing WAB members there ………………?

Keith.

I shall buy myself a flagpole and fly a WAB duster when I camp
I must say I like the square green and antique brass badge myself

Re: WAB badges, or l should say lack of them!

Stu , I shall send full price details by email tommorow but the basic answer on the artwork was that a 300dpi colour jpeg will be fine for enamel badge manufacture
