| | | Re: wish list Definitely agree with the Kingfisher, I don't think I've seen one yet. For now though I'd be quite happy with a Noctule bat and a Grass Snake (seen plenty of Adders though).
Some things I would like to see again are the ptarmigans in the Cairngorms and the multicoloured Rabbits on Westray, Orkney. Guess when you start to think about it, the list just keeps getting longer.

| | | Re: wish list For the last couple of years, my wildlife wish has been to see a Red Kite flying over my home village!
I've seen lots of these magnificent and charming birds before (yes, I know, you can just drive down the M40 past Stokenchurch to see them!), but they were re-introduced in the south-western end of the Chilterns whereas I live in the north-eastern end. They are gradually coming this way - I've seen them nearer and nearer to my home over the last couple of years - in fact I've now seen kites a couple of times further east than where I live.
I've done quite a bit of walking in the Bucks/Oxon part of the Chilterns, and frequently had Red Kites flying low overhead - I didn't need binoculars to get some great views of them. They don't seem upset by human presence, and are regularly seen in the centre of places such as Watlington, Chinnor and Princes Risborough. I would just love to have them flying overhead here in Kensworth.
I recently saw one just a mile away at Whipsnade, and two of my near neighbours have seen them from their gardens, so I guess I shouldn't have too long to wait now! |

| | | Re: wish list I'm looking out for a red kite too, they are fairly common just a couple of miles north of here and I've seen them all the way up Wharfedale beyond Bolton Abbey. So much for them supposedly liking city environments! |

If you read my post further back on this thread, you'll see that my wildlife wish has been to see a Red Kite here in Kensworth (a village on the edge of the Chilterns Hills, a mile or two from both Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Zoo). I was born and brought up here, and moved back in with my parents about three years ago. Since then I've been doing lots of long walks in the countryside, both in the Chilterns and elsewhere. It has been a real delight to see the Red Kites further west in the Chilterns - I get a real buzz whenever I see them, and have longed for them to spread eastwards to where I live. About 9-10 months ago, I saw one behind Whipsnade Church only a mile or so from home, but since then the nearest I've seen one was between Dagnall and Edlesborough, about five miles away.
I bought a new camera recently, and have been spending some time in the garden taking photos of birds on and around the various feeders. I was out there for about an hour this morning - nothing at all unusual in the way of visiting birds, but I was pleased to get some better shots of a Dunnock. Then I saw a large bird in the sky, to the right of our garden and over the paddock that our row of houses backs on to. I assumed it would be a Buzzard, as I see them here quite frequently. But almost immediately I spotted the forked tail, and realised that at last I'd seen a Red Kite in Kensworth! So I've achieved my wildlife wish - I was so excited, I dragged my parents out of the house so they could see it too!
Very fortunate that when I finally got to see a Red Kite here, I actually had my camera to hand, switched on and set up for photographing birds! The bird was some way off and quite high up, so the photo is heavily cropped and not too good, but it's recognisably a Red Kite, which is all that matters to me.
It's been quite a day for birds - apart from the Red Kite, I've already posted on the Birds Forum about a Long-tailed Tit (my second favourite bird) tapping on the window this morning! So I think I'll keep the camera firmly-focussed on the goldfish pond this afternoon, just in case a Bittern pops up! |

I see kingfishers, dippers and red kites around an average of every 3 weeks. 1 Camberwell beauty, Puffins, guilliemots, choughs and razorbills are some highlights for me while on pembrokeshire coast. I would love love love to see a basking shark, crested tit, lesser spotted woodpecker, Swallowtail and an Otter, there's a million other things but they wld be fab as a start

| | | Re: wish list I think I'm running out of things I've not seen! I love sea life, so that's an ongoing exploration, but it has just occurred to me how lucky I've been to live and work in Scotland...
I worked on a wildlife boat as a guide a couple of summers ago, and got to see most of the wildlife that's been listed! Sea eagles (pair), a golden eagle family (leaving the chick at the end of the summer nearly made me cry), thousands of porpoises, dolphins, Minke Whales, osprey, feral goats, Red Deer, Roe deer, Otters.... loads really! Also got to see a sunfish when we were trawling up in Stornoway recently which was awesome!
I'd love to see a basking shark up close - seen a dead one before, and caught a brief glimpse of one from a boat, but not properly. And orca in Scotland would be pretty ace too.

| | | Re: wish list A great question and oh so tough. For a long time it was to see the Mountain Avens in the Yorkshire Dales (had to be in the Pennines really or it wouldn't be as good!) , but after much research and fruitless quests I finally 'bagged' that last year.
So now would be Pine Martin, Purple Emperor, Polecat, White Admiral, Wild Cat, Dormouse, Azure Hawker and Corncrake.
I'm sure there are plenty more and I'll give it some more thought.
Regards, Chris |

I would also like to watch Badgers in the wild. | You'll have to visit me in E. Sussex before i leave Susie - they come down to the conservatory door. There's also a very old set about a ten min walk away - in some primary ancient woodland...and the set's surrounded my anenomes in spring!
