Re: Any Facebook users here?

I've never been tempted to try facebook/Faceparty/Bebo/Myspace etc. I speak to the people I know and like on Msn and I like to telephone people to keep in touch. Much more personal than one of those sites. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people that use it, It's just I can think of more constructive things I could be doing. Plus, If I did join, I know I would get addicted. What with my own forum, Msn and WAB, I'd not have any time for my course. I already spend far too much time online anyway but it's such a good resource that you only realise how much it's missed when it's absent. There are a lot of Facebook 'posers' who just make me cringe with their love of self attitude I'm sure you know what I mean. I'm not really fussed by the 'safety of data' on there, as it's totally down to how much information is displayed by the user. Anyway, for those that are interested, I do infact have Msn messenger and would gladly accept if anyone were to add me, if not, no worries.

My address is Nickagainstthemachine@hotmail.com

Tah,

Nick

I prefer the phone too, if I can't meet up face to face, as so much feeling gets lost otherwise (no wrong ideas here please!) but failing that msn. You're right it is much more personal that way. It was just an idea because i'll only have use of a mobile and library internet access when I start wwoofing and just thought it might be an easier way to keep in touch with people but with only three of my close friends on it....looks like i'll be keeping Orange in business!!!

I'm kinda the same. For some reason I tend to stammer more on the phone so email/MSN, etc. suits me better. Although, you do tend to lose the emotion and tones, etc. through text.

Though if you lose the emotions you can easily give / take the wrong meaning. To me communicating with someone is, to a large degree, about emotions - how you feel about things. Maybe it's just me not wanting to become android like! I know some people just don't like the phone but to me I cant see how you can fully express yourself with texting and pming? Texting is okay if you just want to impart something quickly i.e. train delayed sorry boss late for work... etc. Pm's are the same to a degree but as with texting if something is misunderstood it often goes unseen until too late, at least with MSn you can rectify it there and then! Letter writing is different - there's room to express yourself but for me given the choice it's the phone (though quite a few of my friends aren't on the phone either!).

I agree, and I have accidentlly offended people that way.

I am one of those people who like the 'internet slang', emoticons, smilies, etc. It can be useful tool in getting emotions into text. For this reasons I'm not a fan of mobile texting as many phones (well mine hasn't) don't have the features to do this. I'm afraid I often tend to come across 'android like' on the phone in my attempt to stop stammering!

Also, I have a lot of family abroad, spread from Oz, the middle east and USA where phone calls can be expensive and time zones mean phone calls are at strange and inconvenient times of the day. Emails/letters help to overcome this.

As you say, letter writing is good, and let's be honest, everyone likes to receive a handwritten letter through the post because they are so rare these days!

I am the same to a certain degree. I guess all mediums have their shortcomings, given the choice I would opt for real life meetings because then you can assess body language too.

Definitely the best way and I guess being a touchy/feely person it makes it better that way too (no taking that the wrong way either!) - though with friends spread far and wide it's not so easy now, still it makes it all the more special when we do meet!

Re: Any Facebook users here?

I have joined because one of my sisters loves it and wants to keep in touch via it, but actually I don't like all the add on stuff, it's nice to see their photos, but I prefer emails, and the phone and real meetings so I have practically nothing on it. Emailing is the best thing ever since I have a daughter who has wandered the planet for the last 5 years, and it's the most brilliant way to keep in touch apart from the odd phone call, if I had to wait for letters... I would worry too much!

Re: Any Facebook users here?

I have joined facebook. I do play a lot of scramble. The traveller iq thing is challenging and fun. There are groups which I have joined - OU ones (although the OU has its own mail and messageboard system, facebook is handy for those that have finished their studies), a couple of gardening ones. It can be hard to keep up with everything especially if you don't want FB to email you every time something has happened somewhere. Not really looked at myspace though.
