Re: a few thoughts i felt compelled to share

returning to the original post , today i spent the entire day pretty much dealing with broken down mowers of one sort and another - stripping them , reassembling them, taking them in for service , "reasoning" with suppliers etc

I didn't realise until i got home that i'd transfered so much grease off my hands into my hair that i'd come to resemble sonic the Hedgehog - and also was vaguely sparkly as a result of the copper paste off the pto shaft - lovely

grease is the word is the word is the word , grease is the way i am feeling....

if a woman looks at you as though the cat dragged you in she aint worth worrying about, you got to look past the dirt and grime and see the man i would.

i agree with you. but it works both ways....blokes seldom look at me with anything short of undisguised dismay if they meet me when i've been out surveying and i've managed to get muddy jeans and smudges across my face. sigh. i think we're all much vainer than we like to admit!

course it happens when you're not at work as well. i was out walking the dog today and slipped in some mud. so annoying to have to walk all the way home with mud all down my side and across the bridge of my nose.

you're right - although to be fair i dont think that soaking wet combat jacket and jeans liberally coated in chainsaw chip and chain oil , and stinking of 2 stroke oil is really anyones first choice of how they would like their ideal suitor to be attired.

I generally try to look past the clothing/mud etc when i meet young ladies, principally because a lot of the girls i meet are in the same line of work as me

well said.....back to the original thread point though, on a slightly different bit. any idea what would cause a stand of pine trees (the dreaded sitka spruce no less) to all have no branches below about 1m? walking through one the other day (well, sort of hunching through) no sign of animals at all, just no branches??

as this is presumably comercial forestry i would guess they were brashed up when they were young - ( for those that are unaware brashing up is the practice of taking all the side branches off, traditionally with a billhook but more recently with a chainsaw /polsaw with the intention of encouraging the tree to grow straight - and also to facilitate access along the rows for eventual thinning)

Actually thinking about it when I met my (now ex) girlfreind of nearly three years for the first time, my opening conversational gambit was - "you've a smudge on your nose" - this was in the pub after a hard days hedgelaying on my part - and tree planting on hers

would that leave little stumps, or would it be completely "smooth"

It would leave little stumps which in time would decay leaving small round holes which would eventually fill in tho still be visible in the bark pattern

if these arent visible then it indicates that the treeswere planted under an older "nurse" crop which caused them to put all their enegry into growing upwardss to reach the light - this is more common with yew and some hardwoods , but you do see it in softwood forestry occasionally - normally where trees were desitined or at least intended for timber production rather than pulp.

ok. so these trees still have little stumps, but its quite an old stand at a guess, because the tree's are about 20m tall. i didn't notice any circles in the bark though.

if they still have stumps it indicates that the branches we taken off quite recently (with a year or two) perhaps as a preparatory to thining or to gain access for other reasons such as squizell control or marauding biological surveyors
