Talking Hopefully be joining my local bat group in wantage

I looked at the stagecoach timetable and they`ve got a bus that goes directly from Oxford city centre to Wantage so i`ve decided i`ll try and join my local Bat Conservation group.
I rushed home today from college and got straight in and turned the comp on and phoned David Endacott up to ask him about volunteering with there group, so he gave me some person called Stuart`s email address so i emailed him.
I just need Stuart to send me some details about volunteering with them.
Looking forward to it, just hope it doesn`t land in his spam/junk file and he deletes it.:
Can`t wait

That sounds like just the sort of hobby you need Carl. Perhaps you could gain a bit of extra knowledge in the meantime by visiting your local library or checking online and reading up on any stuff you don't already know about bats.

Keep cool, Carl! You'll come against a lot of idiots - you recognise what they are, no need to get too involved. In the meantime work well at the college and, now, get stuck in with the bats - and any other wildlife activities that you can .... Good luck

Re: Hopefully be joining my local bat group in wantage

Hye all
I just went up to my local reserve and it has changed since i last been up there, some have thrown the logs that BBOWT put down for people to sit on and watch the wildife, into the big pond.
And plus i was wandering around the woodland seeing where to put some bat boxes, found a couple of what looked like to me good places. And then i noticed a tree with four bat boxes on it.I read somewhere about looking under the BB for bat poo(little black bits) i didn`t see any.
But i`m thinking of goind up there to night to have a look for them.
Anyway what time would people recommend?
Thanks

Carl

Cool Re: Hopefully be joining my local bat group in wantage

naturally dusk is a good time,
If you do get to volunteer it will give you invaluble info as to the best areas to go and what signs to look for in regards to knowing if a bat box has a tenant or not.

Have you a local National trust place/woodlands only cos these normaly hold evenings such as bat watching (at least they do here). Even if you do it just the once theres lots to benefit from.

Good luck on finding their droppings,
I personally have only tried it a few times, its like finding a needle in a haystack.
Or more the point really small dark bits amongst soil and grass areas.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your evening

That was the guidance for quite some time, three or four to a tree all facing different aspect, bats are very sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature I guess its thought that providing lots of choice in one spot was the best solution.
I have found though that three schwegler bat boxes to a tree is a bit much unless you have a very big tree!!
