Littering

I returned home after work and there was a delivery van in my reserved parking space. As I reversed back to one of the non reserved bays I saw the driver of the van drop a load of hand made note slips on the floor. Essentially they were probably blank A4 sheets of paper ripped up into maybe 8ths.

After parking my car I walked over to the van and the driver, on seeing me coming, wound his window down. I explained I had seen him drop the litter but he denied it was litter as 'the paper was blank'.

I was shocked that an adult could think in such a way. Needless to say after a word with him both he and his mate were walking around the car park picking up every piece of paper.

Earlier the same day I saw a bloke in his 50's take a spent pack of 10 Embassy out of his pocket and slip them onto the floor. I followed him into the shop, where he proceeded to replace the empty packet. I quickly paid for my diet cola and followed him out and pointed out his error, asking him to pick them up

He looked at me like I was mad. He then got into his lovely new expensive car. What an example to set kids. At 50+ you would think he should know better.

Re: Littering

Boddie, I come accross this quite often. I was going up to feed the foxes the other night when I was just about to pass this car when I saw all sorts of rubbish come flying out of this car's window so I stopped behind the car which was about to leave blocking them in, I got out of the car and told them I wasn't going to let them out until they had picked it all up, after a lot of abuse from them I told them I was an off duty policewoman and they would be in trouble if they didn't pick it up and guess what they picked it up and appologised and said it wouldn't happen again they were also parked about 3ft away from a rubbish bin. I often pretend to be a council official or an off duty policewoman and it always works You should try it sometime

Re: Littering

Criminal offence to impersonate a police officer.

I have a menacing stare and am very good at uncomfortable silences. I simply make my point then silence, eye contact. Never fails.

I know it's a criminal offence but who's to know I find being a woman nobody takes any notice unless I say I am someone in authority and it's never questioned they just do as they're told, anyway I'm willing to take that chance rather than see the countryside covered in litter

Re: Littering

I still pass people who drive into the countryside to dump rubbish,I just make a note of their number and pass it on to the council or leave a note with it on amongst the litter

I would try that you are far less likley to be abused if they think you are in authority, and they know they are in the wrong and could get a fine.

Re: Littering

Back to the thread....

Its' a disgrace the amount of littering going on, fly tipping etc. It doesn't seem to be diminishing either.

Police, schmeece. I don't give a monkies. If more people made a stand and set better examples then kids would follow suit.

Re: Littering

Fly tipping? Whats that all about? You fill sacks full of rubbish then choose to adorn the countryside with them. Some people are just beyond help.

Re: Littering

What I don't get, is that it takes probably more effort throwing it over a hedge, or whatever, than it does to go down to the local dump!

Re: Littering

For me its not an effort thing. Its almost as if it could be an illness. I have a mate who's old dear is a serial shoplifter, despite being minted. And she freely admits it. Just does not compute.

Thanks Helen for your concern but nobody knows who I am personally and if anybody is a decent copper they would probably ignore it and say good luck to me after all I am doing the public a service
