| | | Who Can You Trust? Time was when your old mans word was his bond. You trusted his word, as well as his judgement. Well not for me. No more.
Many of you will know just how petrified I am of snakes. This could be for many reasons. - My old man getting bitten by one in Borneo, and having his life saved by a ghurka.
- My (jungle trained) old man running up the second at Cottesmore golf club after the 'hose pipe' he was showing me uncoiled and went for him.
- My old mans reassurance, on the North Yorkshire Moors, that "there are no snakes up here man, whats wrong with you?" (in a scottish accent) only for one to appear within 20 seconds.
So one has to say that it came as no surprise to hear that last week, when clearing the overgrown plants from my Queen Mothers dry stone walling my old man felt a nip and returned his hand with an Adder hanging off his thumb, teeth still embedded.
The trust has gone. If there are kids reading - Dad is not always right. Infact he is sometimes Oh So Wrong. |

The moral of this should also be " Dont stick your hand where your hand dont belong!!"
Hope Both your old man and the Adder have recovered.
And thanks for making me smile

| | | Re: Who Can You Trust? My old mans thumb (the top end) swelled up a bit. Probably a bit like a wasp or bee sting. He probably sucked anything out. When he got it in the ankle in Borneo he could not reach the bite and the Ghurka was sucking it as he carried him to the mecical centre, whilst at the same time grabbing the snake so it could identified. Apparently any delay and he would have carcked it.
My old man put the Adder back in the wall after showing my old queen and my Nans nurses. |

You have got to admire his determination to help with your
hobby
Ps I may be going to the New Forest to look at the snakes there

Hail, rain or snow, into your cabin you must go!
However whenever we were helping him outside and it started to 'hail, rain or snow' god help us if we wanted to go in to our cabin |

| When I was a kid I had impetigo and my old man was insisting I applied surgical spirit. I was not happy about this until he showed my that it would not hurt (by applying it to his own impetigo free feet) I fell for it and boy did it make me smart (obviously not that smart) |

. | by the way there are Adders at thursley , but dont worry i'm a fully trained paramedic so i'll look after you when , sorry if , you get bitten
incidentally sucking out the venom is something of an old wives tale unless you get there instantly - the general treatment for Adder bites is to elevate the limb and adminsister anti inflamatories and adrenalin
for more serious snakes you either administer the correct antivenin - or you lie very still in your sleeping bag and wait for death - if you are still alive in the moring you'll be okay

| | Re: Who Can You Trust? Back in the late 1950's I told my old man I was interested in science and wanted to work in industry. He laughed at me and put me down hard. He told me that everything that people needed (and wanted) was already being made and there was a limit to consumerism - he didn't use those words exactly and the conversation took place over several years, but it pretty much squashed any interest I had in science/physics/engineering.
In retrospect, I've never quite encountered such a bizarre view from anyone, especially considering he is a total technology nut now, loves computers and stuff (in his 80's!).
I regularly throw Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and that Dyson bloke at him, just to make him squirm. |

I regularly throw Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and that Dyson bloke at him, just to make him squirm. | I remember my then narrow minded older brother when I was about 15 and he was in his late twenties going on about how women shouldn't go to uni how it was a waste of tax payer's money because they'd only drop out of work early on to have babies
I thought to myself...'ill show him' and proceeded to study hard, went to uni at 18 got a 2:1 biology degree and a fab job that I have been in for six years HA ... He got made redundant at 40 (though that's no laughing matter) he then had to drop out and go back to uni to re- train... Double HA
Thankfully he's better educated in every direction these days
