Anyone else drowning?

We've had over 3 inches of rain in the last 24 hours - might be as much as 4 inches. I can't tell exactly as the home made rain gauge overflowed in the night Given that our average yearly rainfall in this area is 24 inches it's probably not suprising that the pond too has overflowed and part of the patio is underwater.

This morning I saw the wettest, most bedraggled and miserable magpie I've ever seen. He looked as if he'd been swimming and didn't enjoy it. The blue tits and squirrels aren't in much better shape, poor things.

Anyone got any sandbags?

Awful here, too. The (big) baby blackbirds have been sheltering underneath my car.

Re: Anyone else drowning?

Same here - my pond levels have risen by at least 2 inches since yesterday and I've been watching some very bedraggled looking adult Robins and Blue Tits feeding their equally bedgraggled looking youngsters.

A couple of the fledgling Blue Tits have cleverly found themselves some shelter in some ivy covered trellis immediately above our patio doors with Mum and Dad flying in food supplies from one of our nearby feeding stations.

I do hope these youngsters manage to survive this period of cold wet weather

Jeff

Re: Anyone else drowning?

Yip, the best I can say here is that it isn't raining quite so hard now as it was earlier. Still no letup, so the garden planting and tending (which we enjoy) has been replaced with paper sorting, filing and shredding - nobody's favourite job and we're only just speaking....

Re: Anyone else drowning?

Spare a thought for those unfortunate creatures who had to brave the elements this weekend

Perhaps we should change the saying "drowned rat" to "drowned pheasant"?

Re: Anyone else drowning?

I don't want to be lynched but we have had a wonderful day today - blue sky and breezy - dried 3 loads of washing on the line and went for a walk to a place called Uwcmynydd in North Wales - it was so clear that we could see Ireland
(It did rain on Saturday but not much)

Re: Anyone else drowning?

We had a cold day yesterday but very little rain, today it was an overcoat warmer and the sun has been out all morning, the clouds keep drifting over but there is still plenty of blue sky up here in Lancashire.
