| | | New Potatoes When will greengrocers stop referring to 'New Potatoes'? They've been out for years now, so isn't it about time they just called them potatoes? |

| | | Re: New Potatoes Years ago I worked on a market stall and we sold old potatoes and new ones, you never see old potatoes now, also potatoes now are blasted with water to clean them and I'm sure that takes the good old earthy taste away, I only wish that I had a garden so that I could grow my own. I heard from an inside sourse that supermarkets store their fruit and veg for up to a year before selling them, surely this takes away some of the nutritional value |

| | | Re: New Potatoes You are spot on Pat. I am spending alot of time in Wales at the moment and always stop if I see a farmyard selling produce. The difference in tastes is like chalk and cheese. Beside the supermarkets aggressive pricing is killing the farmers, both arable and milk producing, and meat as aswell I guess.
I try to get only the esssentials from the supermarkets and shop 'at source' for fresh produce. |

Have you also noticed a lot of produce is labled "washed and ready to use" why? is it so that they can charge more, I would sooner buy stuff with earth on it and wash it myself, or maybe it's never seen any earth |

| | | Re: New Potatoes You can grow potatoes in a barrel or large pot on the patio. Thats if you have some space. I have a plastic dust bin with holes in the bottom. You only need 4-5 potatoes for a barrel full.
When Im not growing them I buy a sack from my local shop but they are that dirty you have to scrub them. But there is no comparison on tast. They are produced locally. I dont know what supermarket do to food alot of it is tasteless. |

| | | Re: New Potatoes I thought rocket salad was good until my mate gave me unwashed rocket salad from Saino's. He washed it and the taste was incredible. Apparently washed more often than not means bleached. |
