| | | Re: How did you get your username? I would like to say it is my real name as it has a certain ring about out. However, the story is as follows: In nineteen canteen when I was a lad my RE teacher, of all people, at junior school told us that everyone should have a nickname and even the Bard had one, you guessed it Billy (William) Wobble (Shake) Dagger (speare). I liked the story and all these years later I thought I needed an interesting name for the web.

My user name was given to me by the DTI. I use it all the time on other web sites and it is unique to me I got fed up with trying to think of a name and then being told that that one was in use ,so I just use G0NYM all the time ,an other Hobie of mine is amateur radio and G0NYM is my call sign
I know its not very original and quiet boring I suppose but it is the truth.
By the way it ain't GONYM its G0NYM
Any way thats it Claire .

| | | Re: How did you get your username? I love Bananas and Spiders, so simple really !! Actually it's taken from a lyric from the band Marillion off a song called This Strange Engine a song about the singers father who sailed the world in the merchant navy and came across various sites including seeing native West Indians loading bananas on to boats for export...the rest is obvious. Are there any other Marillion fans on here....you don't know what you're missing |

| | | Re: How did you get your username? The Urisk is a Scottish Faery that inhabits waterways. It is anaglogous to the Faun, Satyr and Pan (and the Jersey version, if anyone can help me get the name, it's like La Porleaque or something He was the inspiration for Shakespeare's Puck though, or at least the name was derived from it).
Although wild, and very bizarre looking (owing to it's goatlike legs) it is generally regarded as a fairly benevolent faery that enjoys the company of and conversations with mortals. They are even known to be helpful to crofters and housekeepers, tending to livestock and helping with jobs and tasks. but you have to mind and leave a libation of milk out, for even the most selfless soul can feel unappreciated if not rewarded!
There was a tribe of Urisks (gaelic is Uruisge, IIRC) that lived in the Perthshire area. Their chieftan was called Peallidh (Felly? Felldy? Peally?). The area they were said to reside was named Obar Pheallidh: Anglicised to Aberfeldy! This has no relevence to my name, but it's a nice wee story nevertheless!
I have an interest in Scottish and Celtic folklore and mythology (it's just as rich as Greek or Roman! And so is English, if you look hard enough! As much as I love Tolkein's work, he didn't really need to rewrite our folklore there just wasn't enough unearthed at the time), and the Urisk is probably one of my faves. it was either that or Each Uisge, but that's a beggar to pronounce if you don't know it ( Ech Ooshkya).
That's really it. I used to use the name Quincy, as it's my nickname, but a lot of sites and forums wouldn't let me use it because either it was too short or it was taken. So I used to go by my other nickname of Roadkill Demon, again stemming from the whole Quincy ME/Dr. Death (I once told my manager at work I thought about becoming a pathologist...) and the fact that my first car was really old (NOTHING to do with actual roadkill, or boy racing or anything dumb like that). I was here for a while under that name, but recently rejoined with a much better name! |

My first ever username was blesspoppet, which is more interesting but everyone tended to think I was a lot younger than I really am. I wish!

| | | Re: How did you get your username? Back in the 'good-old-days' of the eighties, I and a group of friends all had Amiga computers which were quite avant-garde as far as graphics and sound were concerned, particularly compared with the IBM type PC. Advocates of the Atari would of course claim that they were better, (just to fend of their retorts in advance). Far be it for me to blow my own trumpet but in those days, within our circle, I was the one who 'knew how to' and used to solve most of the problems arising; consequently they used to refer to me as 'the guru'. When the internet came along and most fora etc. required an exclusive username I just combined Amiga with guru and it has been generally accepted first time. I think there are two other people in the world who use this Username but generally our paths don't cross. |
