| | | What Is Your Phobia Demicav suggested this so thought i would start it....
What in Wildlife do you have a Phobia about? and if possible say why
My Big Phobia is Daddy Long Legs.. I am terrified of them especially in a confined space..
I was ok with them until i was 16, when my Boyfriend and his brother put 6 live ones down the front of my T-Shirt...I was Hysterical, they thought it was hysterical.. until they realised I wasn't messing around and then they panicked as well....So since then I have had a real fear of them that no matter how I try i cant overcome it...
I am also not to keen on Spiders but am getting better with them

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia Ditto, Craneflies. Hate them.
It stems from a time as a kid when one in my room flew into my ear, and ever since then they seem to be able to sense my fear and know where my Achilles Heel is - Achilles Ear I guess.
I dread the time of year when I'm surveying in a wide open field, lovely day, feeling relaxed and a little drowsy from a long walk and the heat of the sun, then blunder into a swarm of them emerging and all - I'm convinced of it - every single one of them aiming for my ear.
Hate them.

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia I am pleased to say that I don't have any wildlife phobias, at least not of creatures in this country. I find everything far too interesting to be scared of it. Even crane flies are pretty, or at least interesting, if you look closely enough. There are all differents sorts of them too.
I am not over keen on maggots, but that is purely because an old Rabbit of mine became flyblown. That being said I am not scared of them and will handle them if I have to.

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia Well for me it's big house spiders. I'm fine with little ones but those really big ones give me the shivers. I check behind the bed before I get in which is silly as I know one could come along five minutes later. If there's one in any room it has to go out, I cannot tolerate them no matter how hard I try. I think my phobia stems from my dad chasing me around with spiders when I was young but I'm not 100% certain. I guess in my mind I just don't associate them with anything nice. I'd love to be free from my phobia, I think life would be easier, although I have made some progress with the smaller spiders. |

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia hmmm craneflies... I used to be scared of them but as a little tomboy I watched the boys bchasing the girls around the playground with them and i REFUSED to let a mere BOY have such a potential weapon over me so I forced myself to catch one and overcame my fear.
However, it was an unhappy incident that resulted in the closest thing I have to a phobia, sat with a bunch of girls all older than me, the most popular caught a cranefly and proceeded to pull all its legs and wings off this poor poor little animal.... My heart broke and I was tormented with guilt that I wasn't brave enough to say anything to her nor brave enough to kill it to put it out of its misery (can only hope that insects don't feel misery) to make her stop...
Awful, so now I have a vague phobia about injured insects or worse injuring insects, because I still find it hard to kill them (or anything else) even if its the right and good thing to do...... it still brings back a little of that feeling of heart broken guilt I had when I was little.... |

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia Moths, the big hairy ones!
Like most phobias I think this stems from childhood and is connected with their habit of flying around lightbulbs. When I was a toddler I used to have a lamp on at night by my bedside and any moths in the room would naturally be attracted to this. At the time we lived in an old Victorian house with high ceilings and a moth with a one inch wingspan could easily throw a shadow several feet across - right above my bed!
More than 40 years later I'm still very uncomfortable with moths. I am going to make a concerted effort to overcome this though as I know it's ridiculous and they are harmless and quite beautiful creatures really.

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia I don't have any phobias as such, just strong dislikes of spiders!
I do know a couple of people who have genuine bird phobias. I was sat outside work recently with a colleague and spotted a couple of red kites circling above. Pointing them out I turned to find a crying, quivering wreck beside me, I totally forgot about her phobia . I felt torn between guilt for pointing them out and feeling chuffed to see them flying so low.
Also, a few years ago now my Dad, another bird phobic, almost pushed my (then) 10 yr old sister into a lake to avoid a couple of low flying ducks.
I must admit I do feel for those with genuine phobias, it soes impact on their life.

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia I really hate spiders.
As many of you will know, I am trying to catalogue and photograph all wildlife that I find in my garden (and house!) but I am having a real problem with the spiders. There are none yet on my web site, but I am trying to pluck up courage!
With all the other "bugs", for want of a better word, I find myself scratching while looking at the images, trying to identify them in books and on Google, and trying to build the web pages.
Perhaps I should stick to flowers!

Have become all cold and shaky at the thought of them. Many a night's peaceful batwatching has been destroyed by hearing the clack-clack-clack of their wings.......

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia I absolutely hate spiders, even at my age wake up screaming the house down with nightmares. I have been like this all my life. It's stupid and irrational but I cant breath after the screaming and just go to pieces and shake like mad. I, like Jennyb and can't bare to take photo's of them for my website.
I also won't go in lifts and hate confined spaces. My worst nightmare situation would to be in a lift with a spider! |

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia I have no phobias at all, so I'm lucky I guess.
However I do have a very strong dislike for Ticks, mainly because I frequently have to spend time at the end of a great days Dragonfly/insect photography prising the little swines out of my flesh, an unfortunate downside to spending a lots of time crawling around in Reeds and long grass. |

I used to be worried about them sucking my blood till I found out only the rare medicial leech does that in the UK. How a round blob 5mm across strecthes into a long leech 5cm long just amazes me :
But then again Im not keen on touching them! |

Strange because I like snails.
When I go to put the dogs in their kennels at night the slugs are everywhere, on the paths, up the walls - ugh

| | | Re: What Is Your Phobia again i'm another one for the spiders. Little ones are ok, i dont mind them crawling across my hand, but big spiders, i cant stand them. The worst time was when i was at university, i lay down on my bed one time to see something dark in the corner of my eye. I firstly though it was my hair, then it moved and i just lept up so fast and got really hysterical. It was one of the biggest house spiders i had seen and i made my now husband spend ages turning the room upside down to find it before i would even contemplate getting back on the bed.
I worked with an Australian girl recently in Canada and she was telling me about spiders the size of a persons hand that run about in her house back in Australia she said she wasnt afraid of them either! |
