A Little Bit of Politics

I just thought I'd share my bit of news from today with you.

I have just been voted in as a City Councillor for the Green Party in Brigton and Hove! The Greens have gone from 6 to 12 seats on the council, in the city where we got 22% in the last General Election. I am really excited by this, and hope that the new bigger group can make real differences for the environment in B+H, and maybe at the next GE get the first Green MP in Britain.

I'm not assuming that you all share my political inclinations, but still wanted to let you know, in an (I hope) understandable display of enthusiasm. Humour me.

I guess I better be careful about what I say from now on!

Cheers
Sven

Re: A Little Bit of Politics

Well done Sven, we have two Green councillors in Sheffield (still even with the tories but hopefully will overtake them soon) and even I voted for them this year [perhaps should explain that as a life-long 'Old Labour' member I have been voting Liberal for years just to keep the Tories out! This was, formerly, one of two safe Conservative wards in Sheffield ... Complicated? ] - the tories are now about down to rock bottom so I think it's safe to vote for someone else!

Fortunately, nationally, there seems to have been no great swing to the Tories (indeed, they're losing councillors in much of the north) so Campbell's (that's their leader's name?) "green" con is obviously not working!

Keep up the good work, Paul

Re: A Little Bit of Politics

Well done Sven. I believe actions speak louder than words at a local level and vote for those who work hard to make my community better regardless of their political persuasion. If you only put half the effort into being a councillor as you do into WAB then B&H will go from strength to strength.

Good Luck!

Mike

Re: A Little Bit of Politics

Congratulations Sven, that's great news.

Yesterday was the first time I'd ever voted for the greens (Arun Mathur). Realistically, he never had a chance of winning, I just thought my vote might help cheer him up a bit. In the end though, he finished in a pretty respectable third place, and ahead of the Labour candidate (I'm not sure if that is any kind of a breakthrough in this area but it's still quite impressive to me.) I don't think I'd like the green party to run the country but I'm all for them having a significant voice in things.

It is interesting that Brighton seems to be the #1 hotbed for the green party in the UK. I know the 'Right-on Brighton' stereotype but it isn't a remotely rural or 'green' place. It's hard to think of anywhere in the UK, outside of London, where people live on top of each other more. Perhaps that's it .

If you can sort out household waste disposal there, you'll be made a God.

Re: A Little Bit of Politics

Very well done Sven .... hopefully you will be able to make a real difference as an elected Member of your Council.

Just watch out for those awkward, uncooperative Council officers .... I am one .... I know .
