But how things change "suddenly" from being non-existent to being 'essentials'. In the 1960s plastic bags hardly existed but by the 1970s everyone in UK took them for granted although, then, in Greece or Turkey, people sold them at a reasonable cost rather than them being given away. Now, laws in some countries (e.g. Ireland) mean that they have to be paid for and, in France, the major chains have simply stopped dispensing them yet here .... look at any supermarket checkout .... and I doubt that they're reused or recycled .... such a small thing and most people can't be bothered, so how are they dealing with their major polluting activities?
