Gimp Photo Editor

Does anyone here use the gimp photo editor..
I have managed to resize my photos but not crop them or save them without replacing the original.

Re: Gimp Photo Editor

You should be able to crop your pictures by using the first tool in the toolbox (click on Tools and then Toolbox if you can't see it) it looks like a grey square.

drag around the part of the photo you want to keep and then click on Image and then Crop

You can then click on File and Save as to change the filename and save it as a different picture (thus not ruining your original picture)

I hope this is OK?

I hope I'm not talking down to you as well

Re: Gimp Photo Editor

I do Kayleigh, I use Linux on all my puters and I find that all of the free software works a lot better than the M$ stuff.of course Gimp is available for M$ as is the Open Office Suite. There are too many add-ons and macros for the Gimp to list here, all I can say is that if photoshop does it,then the Gimp does it too ,only better and for free [Gnu Image Manipulation Programme ,all open source software has quirky names ]

Re: Gimp Photo Editor

Hi Kayleigh, with no previous experience of Gimp, I could suggest you copy each photo you want in Windows Explorer or My Pictures, and use the COPY to edit. Could you copy those you want to edit into a new folder?

If you want to work within the My Pictures folder of the original image:
Right-click on your intended image > Select Copy > right-click on a white surrounding area > select Paste > it will now make a copy in the same folder, giving the new image the name of '... - Copy.jpg'.

Just use this and/or rename it. It would then be OK to crop and resize without affecting the original.

Good luck!

EDIT: The posts above come in before mine...

Excellent advice and Gimp will also ask if you want to save the changes made to the original, to which of course you click on the no button. Also look for the "undo " button top left ,you can play with your photies to see what happens and then undo right back to your original .Why not take a photie that you dont really need and give it some wellie so you can see the results of all the actions?

Re: Gimp Photo Editor

Hi Jason,
My son downloaded a new Microsoft explorer that completely screwed windows up so I had no access to the internet..
I now have only linux.
I used to use M photo editor and worked for me.

I will try the other suggestions..

Silverwolf I know nothing about computers so you are not talking down to me..

Right.. I have managed to crop and resize ..
It will not save as.
I had to change the name then put jpg at the end...
This needs working on but hey it worked..

Thanks Forfi now I know your on linux I may need you again

Cheers guys...

End product

That's worth it, a Blue-tailed I think. I've never seen one land on a flower head before! What will you do with the OS issue, re-install? You should have been given a disc when you bought the PC. It should be fairly easy.

Was the hard drive affected?
