Question How to move my images?

Just a quick question. I had previously been able to move my unidentified bird photos from that category to the identified category, but now can't seem to be able to do so? I'd like to move my photos as they've now been identified and there's at least 5 of them. Thanks in advance!

Re: How to move my images?

Hi Jen,

The structure of our gallery has now changed and it is no longer possible for us to transfer images directly from the Archive into the main galleries. Instead, you should simply upload your images again, this time to the appropriate main gallery, with their correct titles. If they meet our various image quality requirements then a gallery editor will accept them in due course.

Re: How to move my images?

In addition to Matts comments, you should move your images from the unidentified section to the identified one in the Archives.

Re: How to move my images?

Graham, that was indeed my issue. I used to be able to move from the unidentified to the identified without having to re-upload. I see this has changed now. But if I re-upload them I'll then have 2 copies, and I can't seem to find a way to delete my photos from the unidentified section. Thus my confusion, I don't know how to get my photos out of the unidentified section

Re: How to move my images?

that's OK, you can leave the duplicates in Unidentified. As Graham says, simply move them to the Identified part of the Archive. You can then re-upload new version to the main gallery.

Re: How to move my images?

Ok, well if that's how it's working, I'll do that. They're not worth putting in the main gallery, they're definitely not super quality. So I'll just leave them there in unidentified. I did update the titles and descriptions of them so anyone who looks will know they're identified. Thanks again.

Re: How to move my images?

unfortunately, they can't be moved in the archive at the moment because it breaks the link to the thumbnails in the forum. We're trying to get a developer to create an auto-redirect so we can switch the move/edit back on again

Re: How to move my images?

lol you sounded like my husband for a moment there, he's a programmer, this is his language. I know it's likely even more complicated than it sounds. I'm happy enough to leave them identified in the unidentified if that's what must be done.

Re: How to move my images?

This is something I`ve been looking into this week, (only cos` I`m off with man flue), Soo.. are we saying that images cannot be moved from unidentified to identified in the archive. If they can, then how?

Cheers

Pete

Re: How to move my images?

What I got from the whole thing was it's impossible to move from one catagory to another. I can't delete them from the unidentified either, so they just sort of sit there. I titled them correctly and said they were identified, for anyone looking at them, but that was all I could do.

Re: How to move my images?

Hi All,

Just to make sure: Let's not confuse these two:

- "Moving" from the Archive to the Gallery - which is not moving at all, never has been, but in fact re-uploading to the Gallery, keeping a duplicate in the Archive.

- "Moving" form one section of the Archive to another section within the Archive (form "unidentified" to "identified", from "insects" to "invertebrates" etc etc). This should be done by actually moving (not by re-uploading/duplicating), but is temporarily unavailable until some technical issues are resolved.

Personally I think it would be a very bad idea to start creating all sorts of duplicates within the Archive because we're too eager to store things in the right place - this will cause a major headache once the technical issues are resolved and we could get back to sorting out and cleaning up the archive.

IMHO, for the time being, a much better approach for images that should at one point be moved/reorganized within the archive would be the following:
  • Rename the image appropriately to something like: "Vernacular name etcetera - Scientific name" (the etc could be something like: juvenile, egg, pupa, larva, leaf, bark whatever)
  • Add ID information to the description
  • Add appropriate keywords
  • A link back to any forum-thread where the ID was given would be great!!

All of these are very useful even if the image is later moved to the "correct" section of the Archive and will make checking ID's and moving a lot easier. Also, these are just mandatory if the image should ever be easy to find by searching through the website's search function. In fact, if every image would consistently carry that sort of info, we probably wouldn't even need the categories, but that's not likely to happen soon, so the categories are a good idea anyway.

Please note that all of this is just my personal point of view, not WAB-policy (so feel free to make any mess the system allows to make )
Cheers! Arp

Re: How to move my images?

What about images that are already in the correct gallery but have been wrongly ID'd.

How do we get the mods to correct these errors?

report the image and note what the correct id should be - be prepared to be patient tho as the mods are generally pretty busy (its rumoured that at least some of them have real lives outside of wab too )

There's even a problem here. With the old gallery we all got to see the reported image post, so anyone of us could respond. This isn't the case now, only Stu gets them.
He's extremely busy away from WAB at the moment, so to help reduce his already overloaded schedule can I suggest anyone that wants an image renamed in the main galleries, contact me by PM and I'll get them done.
