logged in - or not!

Just out of interest I wonder if anyone could answer this query -

Earlier today I cleared my cookies/cache, etc. while cleaning my laptop.
Then later when I opened the WAB main page it asked me to log in, as I expected.
But according to the list of online users on the right hand side I was already there!
It didn't bother me I just wonder how come?

In theory there is a cooky which retains your password &c - if you clear cookies then you will have to re-enter your details.

I think that perhaps when you closed your browser (IE?) you asked it to save your tabs - in which case it would retain the memory of the page as it was when you left the site. I know this happens because I've looked at the site on another computer and found myself logged in!

Another manifestation of this is that when I come to the site it is not up-to-date - I have to refresh the screen to get the posts that have appeared since I last looked.

Members are still shown on the right-hand column for something like 15 minutes after they've gone, until the system runs a refresh
