| | | Puzzled - Gallery Images Removed I know there is a lot of work with the categorizing etc but I am a bit puzzled about 2 of my images that have been up over the weekend have now disappeared.I had a nice comment from Barbara and they looked ok to me,I have even got it on my desktop. It is not as close in as I would have liked but was clearly a woodpigeon.I am hampered at the moment as my better camera is in for repair.I had an email today saying my greenfinch has been taken down and I understand that as maybe it wasnt as sharp or close as I would have liked and also it had a shadow of a branch across its face. But I am puzzled as to why the woodpigeons have gone as I have had no email to say they had been removed and as they do not come under the new catagories I am confused as to why

| | | Re: puzzled Hi Cherrybee,
Unfortunately, we've had to crop back on some of the images as the gallery was fast approaching our hosting limit. I've had to remove about 100 of my own images today and also some other photos have been removed as well. I've tried to do it as fairly as possible by removing pics that had lots of shots of the same species, or they weren't very clear, the subject was too small/distant, not in focus or the file was too large (in kbs)
We've had a sudden surge of images recently that has taken the gallery by surprise and put quite a bit of pressure on our resources. As a result, we're going to have to put some new guidelines in place for uploading images and I should hopefully have some more info on that tomorrow.
One of the crucial things is try and keep the filesize down below 250 kb - obviously a lot smaller would be even better, as long as it doesn't affect the quality of the image too much. We have an upper limit of 500k, which is OK in exceptional circumstances for really high-res, high detail, large images, but every time the image is viewed that's 1/2MB of download - so a few of those, viewed every minute creates quite a bit of traffic.
Sorry if some of the images that have been removed were yours, but hopefully when we've got more webspace we can make room them again.

| | | Re: puzzled I thought I'd lost some of mine since they were missing from my 'matt-xyz's images' page. But these were bird shots that had been transferred from the old bird gallery to the new tits and finches gallery. Stu, are you aware that shots that have been transferred to the new galleries no longer appear with a user's other images?
Also, it would appear that new uploads to the new galleries don't appear under the 'newest 15 uploads' section.
Most of my other images seem to have avoided the chop so far

Matt | Yep, we're a bit puzzled as to why some of the images that were moved aren't showing up in the user's group, but others are we'll keep beavering away and see if we can come up with the answer.
I didn't know about the newest images though, so thanks for letting me know

It all got a bit hectic at one point today when the bread pudding thread started showing odd posts and so we had to quickly backup everything in case there was a problem. Backing it all up basically creates an exact copy of the site in a zip that we can then download, but it means that everything on the site is duplicated, so 500k images become 2x 500kb images etc. As the zip was building it was pushing towards the limit very quickly and we needed to create some room in a short space of time.
We've got it sorted now, but we'll probably have to make some more space and get more webspace from our hosts in case we need to do it again.
Oh the joys of running a website

One other minor suggestion though , at present there is no direct link from the main bird gallery to the new bird galleries. It would be nice to be able to get to them without having to go back to the main gallery page. Just a thought!
best wishes

| | | Re: Puzzled - Gallery Images Removed Digi and Klewis - I'm pretty certain that none of your images were removed, they were mainly old, out-of-focus, repeated or difficult to view images that had large filesizes and, apart from my 100, there were only about 20 in total.

Maybe I missed the message that said that there would some 'thinning out of images'. |

In the Waterbirds & Seabirds Gallery. We have some issues still with some people not seeing the sub-galleries.

Mark | Due to the re-organising of the Gallery everyones post counts are only showing the count for forum posts. The gallery post counts have been temporarily removed. When everything is sorted, the count will return. |

| | | Re: Puzzled - Gallery Images Removed The main problem seems to be not that images have been deleted (although clearly a few have), but that once they are moved to the new galleries they no longer appear on a user's gallery.
I'm sure this must be the case for klewis and digi since Stu says their images have not been deleted. All of my shots that have been moved from the main bird gallery to the new tits and finches galleries no longer appear on my own gallery.
A separate problem is that shots uploaded to the 3 new galleries do not appear on the 'newest 15 uploads' section which is probably why some users are not aware of the new galleries yet.
