| | | Problems accessing WAB Stuart,
For the last 3 days I have not been able to access WAB at all. I have had no problem with my Internet connectivity and have been able to access all other Internet sites, except WAB. This has happened several times in the last month and I wonder if anyone else has been having the same problem.
It is very frustrating because I know the WAB site is working for some people because I have been receiving email messages from threads to which I have subscribed. I have not been able to access it via the home page or via links in the emails.
It just comes up with "Page not found" or "Server not available". I wondered if perhaps it is a DNS problem. If so I should be able to access the site via the IP address if it happens again. Can you let me know the IP address?
Do you know of any problem at your end that may be causing this?

| | | Re: Problems accessing WAB Jenny - Jonny had the same problem the other day as well so it could well be a DNS issue. I'll get the techies to run some checks to see if we can find anything.
Thanks for letting me know. |

| | | Re: Problems accessing WAB It sounds like a routing problem to me. If it happens again try this:
Open a Command Prompt window (Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) and enter the following command:
tracert www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk
The output will show something like this: Quote:
Tracing route to wildaboutbritain.co.uk [207.210.86.107] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 * * * Request timed out.
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 19 ms 18 ms 19 ms ge-1-0-0.cr1.gs1.systems.pipex.net [62.241.161.94]
4 19 ms 20 ms 19 ms ge1-0.mr02.ldn01.pccwbtn.net [217.79.160.127]
5 117 ms 117 ms 212 ms gnax.ge2-3.br01.atl01.pccwbtn.net [63.216.31.158]
6 117 ms 117 ms 118 ms 209.51.149.109
7 117 ms 131 ms 117 ms 209.51.137.98
8 118 ms 118 ms 117 ms 207.210.80.130
9 117 ms 118 ms 117 ms 207.210.86.107
Trace complete.
| The first line shows the IP address returned by the DNS and is followed by a list of the "hops" along the route. The first two hops above are my router and can be ignored. If there is a routing problem then you'll see Request Timed Out repeating at the end of the list.
If this happens then make a note of the tracert output and post it here once the site is back up again as it will reveal exactly where the problem lies.
Each machine on the internet is only connected to a limited number of machines, a bit like a spiders web. Each junction (hop) can send data in a couple of different directions and will choose the one that is in the generally right direction.
If one of the junctions is broken or missing the route cannot be completed and the data needs routing around it but this doesn't happen automatically and sometimes can't happen at all - the internet isn't generally as well connected as a spider's web! |

| | | Re: Problems accessing WAB Last night I was getting the standard vBulletin "you have no access to view this page" message - as if I'd been banned for being naughty!
I was quite relieved to get in later on - not that I've got a guilty conscience or anything

I did it the other way around - I gave 20 thousand members full access to the Mod/Admin inner sanctum

The problem is there are just so many options in the admin area that it's so easy to get it wrong...literally hundreds of boxes to tick/options to choose - I hope we never have 20K admins |

| | | Re: Problems accessing WAB Yep, the site is running RAID 10 mirroring to multiple drives in case one fails and everything is hot-swappable. We also backup the dbs and download them every day and .tar and download the entire site each week to hold off-site and continuously rsync to a couple of PCs as well. |

| | | Re: Problems accessing WAB It has happened again. I could not get into WAB all day yesterday and also Sunday evening. I had no problem accessing any other web site.
This time I decided to investigate, dusted off an old modem and tried dialling up to run tracert. It showed no problem and the PC that I was using could access WAB with no problem.
The only difference between the 2 was that my dial-up account is with a different service provider.
So, it would seem that my problem lies with accessing WAB from my ADSL service provider (Plus Net).
I will contact Plus Net to see what they say, but I would be interested to see if the WAB web hosting provider has a suggestion.

| | | Re: Problems accessing WAB Hi Jenny,
The hosts have asked that we simply send them over traceroute info whenever it happens, so they can investigate from there - but as yet, we've not had anything we can send them.

Stu | Since I cannot Traceroute out of my local network and cannot dial up via Plus Net, I am a bit stuck.
I will try to contact PlusNet when it happens again. maybe they can traceroute it.

Is your service provider PlusNet? If so, we could be narrowing down the problem.
