this is a False Widow spider ( Steatoda nobilis) They have a dark shiny body. The abdomen has some pale markings on the top, and there is a creamy coloured band all round the front.False widows have a reputation for biting people, although in truth, this is quite a rare occurrence. You would need to be very unlucky, or go out of your way to be bitten. They only bite if mishandled or provoked. People who have experienced the bite say it's similar to a bee sting. so dont worry about it

| | | Re: Please help Hello ForceUK and welcome to WAB!
I had a little group of these spiderlings in my kitchen and chose to do nothing as I didn't want them scattering all over my place.......
I now have just 7 or so left as they seem to eat each other which is not very nice!!
I wasn't sure that the parents were really in my kitchen last year..... I thought that they might be but wasn't really sure....
I think I have just discovered one on my bedroom ceiling so that will be re-located quite quickly methinks!
They really are not a problem I promise! I react to venom of any sort and go into anaphylactic shock if bitten or stung by anything. It is in my interest to get rid of anything that could cause this but these spiders have been in my place for a couple of years without causing me grief.
I am sure you and your family are ok. I am told that if you are bitten by this spider that mostly you will not feel anything and for most people it is no worse than a wasp sting.

I had to take a photo in order to see them clearly as they were on the ceiling. I counted 30. Unfortunately, when I went away for a week, my partner took the vacuum cleaner to them. There were only a couple left when I got back!

I'm afraid that he would be my ex for doing such a dastardy deed!!
I would not want to be with such a person if these were his standards I'm afraid.

He wouldn't have been allowed to do it if I'd been home. As it is, I only have his word for it that that's what happened! Personally, I have a "live and let live" attitude to the spiders in the house. I'd rather have spiders than earwigs any day - and those I do let him kill!
