| | | Spider id please Can anybody id this for me? Body length 2-3mm. It's living in my garage in Derby. The eggs in the background were pink earlier in the year but they've lost the colour - I assume they're all empty now. I think the spider that was there earlier in the year was bigger so this might be one of the babies?
Thanks |

| | | Re: Spider id please This looks like Steatoda nobilis to me. I have them in my kitchen, babies that is. I did not know that the adults were in my kitchen last year to produce babies this year.
Please do not be afraid of them, they do not want to harm us. They will only bite if squashed or pressed in any way. Just leave them alone and they will keep down many pest species.
If you need to ask more, please do not be afraid to ask, we are here to help you and would love to do so.

| | | Re: Spider id please Thank you. I had wondered if that's what they were, just wasn't sure on the size. I can't really remember how big the one that was there earlier in the year was, but it might have been less than 7mm (everything I've seen says they're 7-14mm).
I'm not too bothered about the biting thing - I'll just make sure that if I have to move any I'll pick them up in a glass rather than in my hands. Don't want them thinking I'm about to squish them! |

| | | Re: Spider id please A picture showing the dorsal (top) side of the abdomen would be helpful, the abdomen is not typical for Steatoda.

That's the best I've managed to get so far because of its position, but I'll see what I can do. |

| | | Re: Spider id please Yes, that's better. It's a Linyphiidae species. Possibly Lepthyphantes sp. or Bathyphantes sp.

| | | Re: Spider id please Easily done! Photos weren't quite sharp and not best angles for i.d. It's often hard to distinguish some families from photos.
