| | | Spider ID galore (and bonus Harvestman) Hi guys, been threatening to post a thread about some spiders I've seen in my garden and home for a while and now I'm finally getting it done.
Most I don't know what they are but there's a couple that I've thrown in because I like them!
I am based on the south coast in Dorset, for location info. All taken in the past 4 weeks.
So here we go!
1.
There were several of these all looking the same attached to clothes pegs in the back garden. Someone suggested Linyphiidae sp.? All between 3-5mm body length.
2.
Thinking this is enoplognatha ovata based on the colours? About 3-4mm by my back door.
3.
My big meaty Steatoda Nobilis. Nearly 10mm in length. Has been feasting on a giant Tegenaria for a while now!
4.
Not far from my Steatoda Nobilis. Max 4mm length, messy web, located on my garage.
5.
In my back garden attached to a wicker hanging basket. 3-4mm length.
6.
Easy Araneus Diadematus. Roughly 8-10mm
7.
Unknown Harvestman. Pretty big but with relatively short legs. Between 8-10mm on my garden fence.
8.
This one was a big mystery for me! 1-2mm barely noticed it. Weird patterns on it's back. I know it's a poor picture but any help would be really appreciated as it looks amazing!
Thanks everyone! |

2. Enoplognatha ovata
Like the last image, have seen it somewhere before but can't place it. Nice find!

| | | Re: Spider ID galore (and bonus Harvestman) That harvestman looks interesting.
At that size and with a rather broad abdomen, plus distinctive trident on it's 'nose' I would suspect Odiellus spinosus.
See my comments on this other post What species of Harvestman?
But I'm not an expert on this species and those photos lack really close details so ideally I would like a second opinion on this one. |

| | | Re: Spider ID galore (and bonus Harvestman) OK guys, good stuff here!
So:
1. Zygiella (X-Notata?) - I'm happy with this one!
2. Enoplognatha Ovata - Happy with that
3. Steatoda Nobilis - Yep.
4. Zygiella again - yep I'll accept that
5. This looks nothing like any Steatoda Nobilis I'd ever seen (and I've seen a lot) - I have seen pictures of other spiders that look closer to this - I'd like a second opinion please
6. Araneus Diadematus - Yep
7. Odiellus Spinosus - Looks good for that one, thank you!
8. Thomisus onustus - Interesting find! Could be - I'll look them up, big thanks for that!
So I'd like confirmation on 5, but I think the rest are sorted! |

| | | Re: Spider ID galore (and bonus Harvestman) I would go with UB4, Steatoda nobilis. The abdominal markings can vary a lot, but the general 'pattern' is consistent.
Check here http://www.galerie-insecte.org/galer...a_nobilis.html
I am not convinced with number 4, patterning doesn't look right for a typical Zygiells

| | | Re: Spider ID galore (and bonus Harvestman) i'm still going with ero species for number 8 if you google image ero tuberculata you'll see some very similar pictures. but i think off the top of my head there are 2 similar species that need a microscope for species level ID.
