| | | Widow spider in kent? Hi all, I have just captured a spider that made its home in my daughters window, usually i just leave them be but this one really reminded me of a widow spider, i just want to find out if it's a risk to my girls before i let it go! It's a typical widow shape, dark brown and shiny, it's has very pale markings on the back of it's abdomen. Any ideas? I'm very new to this so once i've figured out how i'll try to post a pic!! |

| | | Re: Widow spider in kent? looks like a steatoda nobilis one of the false widows. they can bite (similar to a wasp sting from what i have heard) wouldn't hurt it to relocate it if you are unhappy with it being resident.

| | | Re: Widow spider in kent? I really wouldn't worry about it. I find them to be quite non-agressive, usually they either run away or play dead when disturbed. No more dangerous than any other spider.

| | | Re: Widow spider in kent? Welcome Jokent!
I too live in Kent, near to Ashford.
We have to just get on and live with these creatures, they are all around us and we cannot change that.
I just found a junior Steatoda nobilis in my kitchen tonight living within/under my indoor windowsill. I knew there was an adult there but it has obviously had babies recently. This one was eating another spider, hopefully not it's mother!
They are not interested in us as prey and will only bite if squeezed or pressed in any way. Just leave them alone or re-locate in bushes nearby if you are worried.

The photo below shows the genuine 'widow' (Latrodectus species) on top of the stick and a 'false widow' (Steatoda species) below.

I can assure you that we do have 'False widow spiders' (Steatoda nobilis) here in Kent and all along the south coast now.
I just found a junior one in my kitchen tonight eating another spider!
I recorded one of these in Ashford Kent about 2 years ago walking along a pavement in the town centre.
