| | | Large(ish) Orange and White spider found in Lincolnshire UK Hey there! If anyone could identify this spider I would be very grateful. I apologise for the blurriness of the image but my phone wouldn't focus that close. It is about 1.5-2cm in body length. The web is not symmetrical, and seemed poorly made. It's colouring is tangerine orange with white/cream bands on it's legs. It's back is black and orange, with a white blobby stripe running down it's length.
It was seen in a garden near a forest in Lincolnshire UK.
Many thanks in advance. |

"When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life" Paah!
"When a man is tired of spiders, he is tired of life" Yaay!

There are a number of colour variations of this species and there has been some dicussion in this forum about the possibility of them being regional differences. My current avatar is an example of the colour variation I mostly see in Oxford but yours is a much deeper reddish orange by the look of it. Having said that, I have a much darker specimen in my garden at present - almost black! All very interesting, despite the "commonness" of the species.

| | | Re: Large(ish) Orange and White spider found in Lincolnshire UK I find mainly grey/black/fawn coloured ones at the top end of my garden, and further down they are paler fawn, yellowish and orangey. I thought it because the parents stayed around the same areas. Anyone know how far they travel from "home"?

| | | Re: Large(ish) Orange and White spider found in Lincolnshire UK No idea Hedera. I don't think I'd recognise the spiderlings. Of course this time of year there aren't any! I've only seen the one dark specimen, half way down my garden but the orange-brown coloured specimens are all over my garden.

I have said this before, and quite possibly I am wrong on this occasion, but quite possibly no one knows. Devise an experiment and be the first to know. Don't forget you can't just mark them as they shed their skin, you have to know the pattern of their cycle over the year...
An elegant thought, an incisive idea, and you might be the one. No, not the lottery, that is just casual cupidity, you could be the one to put another small bit on the coat of paint that keeps interest and knowledge going. No observation is trivial, especially if it is accurate, complete and thoughtful.
Araneus diadematus is quite a smart "two tone" in some parts of Arnside, Ginger in Malton... and so on.

| | | Re: Large(ish) Orange and White spider found in Lincolnshire UK I would actually like to modify my previous comment. I have three colour variation here at "wilippa towers". In my front garden today, I found a very pale greyish brown specimen, so pale I wasn't certain it was A. diadematus at first. Then there is the common orange brown shade I have mentioned and I now have two dark brown specimens; the one mentioned earlier and a second found this afternoon.
I almost feel like doing a survey of A. diadematus colour variations. On the other hand, I'm not sure where one would begin!
