| | | Orb Stretch Spider? It's annoying I can't seem to add my photo here as it would be so much easier than trawling throuugh Gallery images which I haven't got time for!
It was a very samll spider, a few millimeters in body length (not including the legs). The legs were pale yellow with dark narrow bands. The abdomen was pale yellow and slightly elongated with black patches up the mid-section and a large black patch at the top of the abdomen where it connects to the thorax. There was also some russet brown on the abdomen.
That's the best I can do!
Also, I can't seem to access the home page or the attachments instruction page as they seem to be down. Lots of odd text!
Cheers,
Alex |

| | | Re: Orb Stretch Spider? Hello Valkyrie,
Your spider looks like a metallina species, either segmentata or mengei. They are both very similar, and common species.
Mengei is typically adult in spring and early summer and segmentata in mid summer to autumn.
The timing would therefore suggest Segmentata, the only way to be sure is to check the genitalia - according to Roberts there are a pair of yellow stripes on the underside that goes right the way to the abdomen on seggy, but stops at the epigyne on mengei - though I've heard many say this is an 'unreliable character'
Hope that helps,
Regards,
Matt

Reason: Doubtful veracity of yellow stripes/epigyne character
