| | | Two dead Tegenaria unknown causes A while ago I walked out into the hall and turned right and when I turned back there was large spider Tegenaria duellica on the floor to the left. On closer inspection it was dead. I hadn't noticied it on the way out, it just seemed to appear from nowhere. There was no injury, it wasn't squashed, no leaking fluid. It seemed perfect and resting naturally - but quite dead!
Last week I was in the conservatory and noticed a Tegenaria sitting out in its web and it didn't move. Again on closer inspection it was dead and apparently uninjured.
Now spiders do get injured or killed when moving things around but I'm sure I hadn't been near either of these before I spotted them. So I wondered what could have happened to them.
In the conservatory, there were a few baby Steatoda close by, which means a mother spider close by as well. They hide in the plants. And there were, possibly still are Steatoda under the washing machine in the hall, haven't checked lately. So I wonder if they could have been bitten. But surely wouldn't they have also been wrapped up? Unless the Tegenaria staggered away before they dropped dead, as Steatoda don't seem to like the light. |
