2 spiders ID please

Any idea on these 2 in my garden please?

I believe they are both garden spiders - Araneus diadematus and that the colours can be variable.

Ah right I did wonder, I seem to remember the last one I saw was bigger and different colour, but if they're variable, that explains it

Aha! That answers my next question then. I have seen a few in my garden recently that are dead ringers for Nige's second spider. Araneus diadematus they are then!

There are a lot of fairly small ones making their webs across the plants I noticed today, and the cross on their back is showing up, hence the old name Garden Cross spiders. By autumn they will be alot larger, and vary from nearly black to bright orange in colour. One of my favourites - I usually have a large lady one in the greenhouse.

YEeah that what we're getting. Two were webbed from the tomato plants to the carrot bags, another 2 from the strawberries to the rabbit hutch, along with a stretch spider of some sort, couldn't get pics though

I'm seeing a few around my garden too. Their webs can be quite big even though the spider is small. And sometimes I can't quite see where the web is attached - it seems to float in mid-air.

PS most of ours seem to be orange in colour
