From that angle I did wonder if it might be a meta (or metellina) species, but I think its probably pachygnatha clercki.
Was it in, or near a damp area?

This spider was close to the coastline of Langstone Harbour. There are salt marshes close by.

| | | Re: Spider for ID  Ack don't thank me, comparing the spines on the legs with the pictures of pacygnatha I don't think pacygnatha ever has such long leg spines, which pushes me back towards metellina. (Either mengei or segmentata, mid summer it could be either)
