Hertfordshire Black

I spent a few years living in Hertfordshire and I kept hearing tales about the Hertfordshire Black spider. Does anybody on here know what they are? I never saw one myself and I can't find anything about them on the internet. Apparently they are enormous, and definitely black rather than brown as I would expect a large house spider to be.

I've just been reminded of them by a post on here about an large spider in a garden in Hertfordshire. I showed my partner (who has seen Hertfordshire Blacks) the photo, but was assured that wasn't one.

Does anybody know anything about these?

Never heard of them.

I found a reference to one on a discussion board, so they do really exist.

Somebody told me that he had one in a demijohn on the top of his cupboard and with its legs stretched out it reached all the way from top to bottom. I'm assuming this must be a bit of a fisherman's tale or people would know about them??!
