| | | ID a red spider please. I wasn't sure if it was a solifuge or not, or if they even live in britain. The pic was taken on a phone so isnt great, but he was about an inch long, and the throax was light red and the abdomen reddy brown, thanks!!! (dont know if it's possible to identify from this pic, but we are in west wales, and i've never seen one before) |

| | | Re: ID a red spider please. Probably Dysdera crocata - The Woodlouse spider (the other species is Dysdera erythrina but appears to be less common). I'm going off your description as much as anything, though characteristics in the photo would fit. Have a google. They have huge fangs to penetrate the shells of woodlice and can also pierce human skin so treat with respect!

| | | Re: ID a red spider please. from the photos on google it is entirely possible that it's what you said. his bottom half wasn't as bulbous and pronounced as the google images, and i didn't notice the fangs as dark as the ones shown, but i appreciate there are slight variations to any creature within a species, and this one could have been young. i didn't want to put my face too close to it as i am quite creeped out by spiders.
thanks very much for the response, i love finding new bugs and stuff i havent encountered before. it was in a damp old extension of an uninhabited building, and there were indeed woodlice around, so all the pieces fit. |
