ID : Lycosidae

Evening,

This spider was plentiful in Ashclyst Woods near Broadclyst in Devon yesterday which a mixed woodland. They were quite prolific on the ground on the sunny south facing side of an open ride.

This damaged specimen was brought home and the 30x lens reveals a row of four small eyes with two larger ones above and another two further back on the thorax which puts me towards the Lycosidae species but I can't get further than that as the plates in Roberts do not give me a good match.

Can anyone advise please?

Hi Andrew,

That's a male Pardosa lugubris s.l. (s.l.= sensu lato, meaning P.l. or one of its very close relatives P. alacris and P. saltans).

Thanks ever so much for putting me right. There is no plate illustration for this in Roberts but the species description on page 219 suggests the habitat was perfect. Thanks.
