There are crab spiders North of the Humber, for example: Summary for Xysticus cristatus (Araneae)
I saw a crab spider (not sure of the species) last year here in Leeds. I picked it up and was so startled by the strength of it's grip that I immediately dropped it!!
So don't be too sad!
I think the jumper looks like Salticus cingulatus btw...

They are quite cool - I haven't seen one catch prey yet but will keep an eye out for it - that would be even cooler!
