| | | Very proud of myself Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I've been enjoying browsing all the spider identity posts and I just wanted to share this pic with you of a large house spider which I caught and re-housed in the garage a couple of months ago. I used to have quite a bad phobia and I can't quite shake it off, so I'm very proud of myself catching this beastie! I'm a bit of a technophobe too so apologies if the pic doesn't work... |

| | | Re: Very proud of myself Hi Juliet, well done on the re-homing and photograph of the house spider, this is quite an achievement for an arachophobic. So stay on this site and it will cure the technobia as well, all being well

I have a phobia too, and I love wildlife and 'grubbing around' under logs or whatever outdoors. No one can believe this who knows me, they think I'm making it up. So I can really sympathise.
Welcome to WAB

| | Re: Very proud of myself very well done !
Took myself a while to get over arachnophobia and remember crying while I first tried removing a spider from the house haha
Not fussed by them now although I do have the occaisional spidery nightmare
It helps a lot if you look them up and learn about them though
approximately how big was this spider ? It looks rather large on the picture

Lindsay, I was trying very hard not to think about how big it was, but I caught it in a pint glass and I know I was a bit concerned about trapping the ends of his legs so the leg span must have been pint glass sized! Can't find my tape measure, but about 3 - 4 inches maybe? It was certainly one of the bigger ones I've seen.
I'm generally ok with smaller spiders now - we have a few residents which don't bother me and I love the zebra spiders that live on the wall outside, but ones like this are a bit of a different matter. And I have a massive issue with cellar spiders (I've only just discovered that's what they're called - I've always referred to them as toilet spiders after being terrified by them as a small child).
Cheers,
Juliet |

| | | Re: Very proud of myself Juliet you are amazing, nature can be frightening. Just think of the life experience, you have allowed a creature to live; not because it is ugly and frightening to you. But you Care, and that is a step towards enlightenment.
Yes be proud of yourself. We are all tenants of this beautiful Planet.

And all this time I've been thinking I'm weird being so fascinated by something I'm terrified of!
It was actually somebody's pet tarantula (a Chile Rose) which got me on the way to getting past the phobia, as it was so big it was just like a mouse or something which isn't scary at all. Not sure I could cope with one as a pet just yet though... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
