| | | Tegenaria I'm currently trying to catch a tegenaria sp and noticed that it didn't particularly want to climb a wall. Is this common? as I've heard that Hobo's don't particularly like going above ground level. |

| | | Re: Tegenaria They do tend to stay on horizontal surfaces. The only time I've ever noticed them voluntarily walking across walls is the occasional male on the prowl.

No. 9 Spider | Well as I said I did read that Hobo's don't like heights. Wonder why that is? |

| | | Re: Tegenaria Well their eyesight would be too poor to register any perception of height and they're unlikely to register any fear if they could see so it may be to do with the amount or type of microscopic hairs or claws on the ends of the tarsus which limits their ability.

No.9 Spider | Yeah it does seem like a case of can't rather than won't. Would the lack of hairs explain why they are fast along the ground? |

| | | Re: Tegenaria I think most ground dwelling spiders can move a bit when needed, probably just due to their having 8 legs. They soon tire out though as their book lungs are not the most efficient.

| | | Re: Tegenaria Why are you calling them Hobo's?
Said 'Hobo spider' only refers to a varied form of Tegenaria agrestis found in the NW of the US. You're not going to find them in Nottingham :P

| | | Re: Tegenaria 'Hobo' spider is an Americanism for T. agrestis, which since being introduced to USA has been held responsible for alleged numerous bite cases. As far as I'm aware there are no recorded cases in the UK or Europe for that matter strange as that may be.
As Venger says it's possible that 'Hobo' is a different species/sub-species? Probably worth a comparison of genitalia to determine the similarity or otherwise, I may look into it further as I admit to wondering about it before.
