| | | Pholcus attack I often have large numbers of Pholcus phalangoides in the house, though the number varies at different times of the year. Having them does seem to deprive me of other spider species in the house- several times I've seen them with a Tegenaria + twice with a centipede snared.
This morning while I was in the kitchen I noticed one near the back door had snared a Common Earwig. As I looked up another Pholcus was also clutching another Earwig- no intruders getting through back door customs here!
As soon as I open the door quite a few other species with several Zygiella around the frames, Linyphia triangularis in flower pots + still quite a few Araneus diadematus. |

| | | Re: Pholcus attack Likewise we have large numbers of Pholcus in and under the house in the undercroft. The rear of the external access door is favoured by some hibernating garden snails. Two years ago there was a small snail neatly wrapped up by an attending Pholcus!
I was hoping that the random webs would catch the burgeoning population of furniture beetles but no such luck. |

| | | Re: Pholcus attack I think I read somewhere that once you have Pholcus phalangoides in your house soon they will be the only spiders you have in your house. |

| | | Re: Pholcus attack I've watched them over quite long periods and they will attack other spiders no matter how big the other spider might be (even a large centipede one time). Their main tactic seems to be one of a lightning quick strike, a bite and an even quicker retire to wait for their venom to take effect. When they feel that their victim is sufficiently dopey they return, bite again and then wrap the victim.
Here's the centipede attack that I mentioned:

| | | Re: Pholcus attack I mentioned them to my partner and said that we have a lot of them in the house, and she replied "What, ghost spiders?", which I think is quite a good name for them!
