Spider ID

Hello all

First post and asking for an ID or goggle search clues please.

I know this is going to be fairly vague as I haven't got a picture but here goes.

I walked into the bathroom last night and spotted a fairly large spider hanging from the bathroom ceiling by its back legs. It was house spider sized but looked plain black, possibly dark brown, with thin white banding on the joints of the legs. The front legs were quite long and looked like it they were a hunting pose with the legs forward and open (if that makes sense?).

I usually pick them up and put them outside but I chickened out, I didn't fancy picking it up without knowing what it was.

Oh yes and I'm in Birmingham West Mids not the Amazon.

I'd initially try a google on Steatoda species first , was the abdomen glossy? Could be a number of possibilities.

Thanks for the welcome. I almost felt like putting the leathers on!

Just conferred with the wife, she was braver than I was, she rescued it from the bath this morning and put it outside. She is saying dark brown with very defined white banding on the legs. She also said it was large house spider sized and quite "sturdy"!?

Looking at the Steatoda species we both thought that the thorax and sternum didn't look quite so rounded and bulbous, more elongated.
