3/4 Araniella cucurbitina/opistographa (another similar duo) |

Araneus quadratus .... or Araneus diadematus | I don't agree. The black spots on the legs and the pattern on the carapace (as well as the absense of hairs on it) rule out Araneus species...
My suggestion would still be Metellina merianae.

| | | Re: Three unknown spiders I'd say Metellina merianae. It's obviously away from it's usual habitat being out in the open. I usually find them in dark habitats such as mine entrances, tunnels or culverts.

| | | Re: Three unknown spiders Well, my garden is pretty dark, but not as dark as a mine. It could be lurking at the back of the compost bin, so I shall go hunting with camera tomorrow. It's a small, enclosed garden though, with dry-stone walls on three sides. There are plenty of stoney nooks and crannies around (I live on Portland) and lots of interesting stuff though, including plenty of False Widows and many small, colourful spiders (not to mention other insects and moths). Watch this space! |

| | | Re: Three unknown spiders I think you're right about pic 2, aeshna5: here's the same spiders 11 days later. Not a great photo, but you can see the markings have developed. |

| | | Re: Three unknown spiders Metellina looks very close. I've been looking at various Metellina, but they don't quite look right. The one in my garden has four very distinct white dots on the back, and a cream patch underneath, which you can see in this (also terrible!) photo. Could this be due to sex or age? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
