| | | is this a false widow? Just found this under the bath while fixing a tap. Looks a bit 'widow' like, although I'm far from an expert.
sorry about photo quality! |

| | | Re: is this a false widow? Many thanks guys. I've now relocated her and her egg sac out in a shaded bit of the garden next to the fence, hopefully they will be ok, but with a baby in the house I'd rather not have loads of these fellas crawling around! |

I did a bit of rooting about on the 'net and found all sorts of info on these spiders. I'm sure much of it should be taken with a pinch of salt, but one reference to the 'medical significance' of bites, particularly in young children made me feel I'd rather be safe than sorry. I know it sounds like an over reaction but hey hey....... |

| | | Re: is this a false widow? There's nothing wrong with ensuring your childrens safety. As you said, better safe than sorry. I think any responsible parent would err on the side of caution.
The chances of being bitten are very small though. |

| | | Re: is this a false widow? Hi, I have just relocated what I think were 2 steatoda females. I also have a baby, she has just started to crawl and tries to put everything in her mouth. I got quite concerned when I read up on the effects of their bites (probably found the same website) it sounds quite nasty! I didn't think to take a picture, just panicked a bit a got them straight out, but if I find any more I'll try to get a photo for an ID just to be sure.

| | | Re: is this a false widow? Personally, I think the dangers from native british spiders closely approximates zero. The WWW is full of misinformation about them. While it is only natural for a parent to be concerned for a childs safety, and there are things that are genuinely worrying, I would suggest that spiders are not one of them. We live in close proximity to many spiders in our houses, with no problems. These animals do not suddenly become more dangerous just because we happen to see them.
My children have been injured more in the last six months by their pet rabbits and hamster than they have in their entire lives by spiders, and my 5 year old daughter is quite keen on poking and prodding them... |

| | | Re: is this a false widow? Point taken although I will continue to remove them from the house if I find them, just as I would a bee or wasp.
