| | Identify scary spider Hi,
Most people I know just panic and squish spiders, however I like to identify them. This one I have to admit makes me feel quite queasy and I've never seen before.
Anyone know what it is?
At first glance I thought it was a beetle or oversized tick.
Many thanks
Trish

| | | Re: Identify scary spider Difficult to be sure about size from that photo. But as a starter, have a look at Zygiella x-notata around 7mm head to tail for a female.
If it is bigger than that try one of the Tegenaria species, upto 14mm body size.
Failing that have a look at Steatoda species, up to 14mm body size, but I'm not over keen on this option to match your spider's abdomen shape.
These can all be found indoors.
If none of the above fits, we will have to start thinking, but there are still a few other options. |

| | | Re: Identify scary spider Not certain from that angle, but if it's very dark and with a flattened body which has about 4 dimples in its back, I'd suggest Nuctenea umbratica. Its natural habitat is under loose bark on logs, but it seems to find window frames and gaps under roofs to its liking too.
Cheers

| | | Re: Identify scary spider I agree with Brian, look for a primrose coloured bit around the edge of the spider. A very common spider, but as it is normally nocturnal and shoots off even when a torch is shone on it, not familiar to many people.

| | | Re: Identify scary spider Thanks - it may well be the Nuctenea umbratica but it has disappeared now so I can't have a closer look.
I'm not too fond of spiders but I'm not a screamer. Looking at the close up photos and this particular spider has roused some really sicky feelings. I must say I prefer 2 and four legs to 6 / 8 legs!! Thanks for your replies.
